The Christmas village inside the castle of Carlo Gesualdo, in Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
With the arrival of Advent, the Castle of Gesualdo sheds its identity as a silent fortress to become the stage for Gesualdo The Magic of Christmas, the Christmas village that has made this corner of the Province of Avellino one of the most popular winter destinations in inland Campania. The manor, once the home of the madrigalist Prince Carlo Gesualdo, fills with lights, music, and wooden huts, and for a few weekends between November and December, the entire Irpinian village changes its face.
The setup occupies the courtyards, walkways, and halls of the castle, which are transformed into a small Nordic-style town: illuminated shop windows, wooden doors, sloping roofs, and themed scenery accompany visitors along the entire route. It is not just a row of stalls, but a scenic itinerary where performers and costumed anim-actors guide the public from one environment to the next.
The heart of the experience for families is Santa's house: the toy factory, the elves' room where letters are written, and the spaces reserved for meeting Santa Claus. Surrounding this are creative workshops, games, and characters that have become part of the event's identity in recent years, from the Grinch to brick-building installations.
The daily program alternates between theatrical moments, choirs, and live music: Christmas carols, gospel, musicals inspired by holiday classics, juggling, and roaming entertainment along the path. The castle also hosts themed exhibitions, particularly displays of artisan nativity scenes, which can be visited alongside the complex's historical rooms.
Exhibitors offer Christmas decorations, hand-painted ornaments, nutcrackers, toys, gift items, and small local artisan productions. It is the perfect opportunity to get a head start on holiday shopping while supporting Irpinian workshops and hobbyists, in a setting far removed from the typical shopping mall.
The gastronomic area is one of the reasons many visitors return every year: mulled wine and roasted chestnuts, hot soups, traditional Campanian ragรน and fried pizzas, grilled meats, caciocavallo cheese, and other typical products from the hills around Avellino, a land of great wines such as Taurasi, Greco di Tufo, and Fiano di Avellino.
The Municipality of Gesualdo has just over three thousand inhabitants and is part of the 'Borghi piรน belli d'Italia' circuit. Its castle, adapted into a Renaissance court at the end of the 16th century, is linked to the controversial and fascinating figure of Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa and composer of some of the most daring madrigals in the history of European music. Visiting the Christmas village also means exploring the historic center, its stairways, and the surrounding churches.
No official dates have been published yet for the 2026 edition of Gesualdo The Magic of Christmas. Previous editions took place on weekends between the second half of November and the end of December, with additional openings on public holidays.
