The neighborhood party in Casalboreโs most populous district, featuring food stalls and live music.

In Casalbore, a small town in the Province of Avellino overlooking the Miscano Valley in Campania, the Rione Gescal is the most populous district: a collection of apartment buildings and courtyards born from post-war public housing, where families know each other by name. Once a year, at the beginning of August, those same streets change their look. Tables are set up, lights are turned on, stalls are lined up, and for one night, the neighborhood becomes the center of life in Casalbore. This is the Gescal Festival, also known as the Gescal Evening.
It is not a massive national-scale festival, and that is precisely its charm: a self-managed neighborhood party where volunteers cook and serve, and the crowd consists mainly of locals, emigrants returning for their August holidays, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The heart of the evening is the food. Food stalls are set up throughout the neighborhood, offering traditional Irpinian peasant dishes to be enjoyed standing or at the communal tables arranged between the houses. It is the same hillside cuisine celebrated in Casalbore during other summer events, from the Wheat Festival to the festival dedicated to lamb and Laticauda sheep cheese, both signature products of Irpinia.
Beside the stalls, there is always a stage. The formula, repeated year after year, features live music performed by local bands and artists: the evening begins with dinner and continues with the concert, allowing people to eat, chat, and dance in the same space, without tickets or barriers. Visitors from outside are met with spontaneous hospitality and the chance to get to know a community that comes back to life in the summer.
The Gescal Festival is a young but well-established event. Local records indicate it was in its third edition in 2022, fifth in 2024, and sixth in 2025: a consistent annual rhythm, always around August 2nd, which has made it one of the most anticipated events of the summer calendar. Its growth is measured by the number of stalls and the level of participation, which now extends well beyond the neighborhood boundaries.
The evening does not stand alone: it is part of the Estate Casalborese, the program that the Municipality and local associations build every year between July and September. Over the various editions, the calendar has included the Wheat Festival with its threshing re-enactment, the Casalbore Art Festival with installations and traveling shows, outdoor cinema, 'La Corrida' talent show, and the 'Stracasalbore' non-competitive race. The most solemn moment remains the patronal feast of Maria Santissima della Neve, celebrated on August 5th, which in recent years has brought well-known names of Italian music to Piazza Cesare Battisti.
Casalbore has just over a thousand inhabitants and is located in northern Irpinia, in a border area between Campania and Puglia marked by wheat fields, pastures, and ancient transhumance paths. It is a territory to be visited at a leisurely pace, with a gastronomy still tied to the seasons. For this reason, the August festivals, and the Gescal Festival in particular, are the best opportunity to understand the town: there is no tourist window-dressing, just a community putting itself out there.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Pangea of Casalbore together with the residents of the neighborhood, with the patronage and support of the Municipality of Casalbore. Official information is released on the Pro Loco's social media channels and the Municipality's website a few weeks before the event.
As of the writing of this guide, the Municipality of Casalbore has only confirmed the program for the patronal feast on August 5, 2026, while the full schedule for the 'Estate Casalborese' and the date for the Gescal Festival have not yet been published. Given the regularity of previous years, the event is expected again at the beginning of August: it is advisable to check the official Pro Loco Pangea channels before traveling.
At the time of publishing this guide, no official date has been released for the 2026 Gescal Festival in Casalbore, in the province of Avellino. The Municipality's website only mentions the August 5th appointment in Piazza Cesare Battisti for the civil program of the patronal feast, while the overall 'Estate Casalborese' calendar is not yet online.
The event's formula is well-established and has not changed over the years: food stalls with traditional Irpinian dishes set up along the neighborhood, outdoor communal tables, and live music in the evening, starting after sunset. Admission to the festival area is free, while tastings are paid for individually.
The date and program are usually announced a few weeks before the event on the social media channels of Pro Loco Pangea Casalbore and the official website of the Municipality of Casalbore. Those planning a visit to Irpinia in August can check there for confirmation of the event.
