Three days of tradition and gastronomy centered around the local melon, in Gavello di Bondeno
Every year, in mid-June, the hamlet of Gavello, in the Municipality of Bondeno (province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna), comes alive with the Melon Festival, one of the most cherished popular festivals in the Ferrara lowlands. The event was born from the local community's desire to promote one of the most typical and characteristic products of its territory: the Gavello melon, a fruit of the land that reaches the peak of ripeness and sweetness precisely at this time of year.
The melon grown in the countryside around Gavello is appreciated even beyond regional borders, so much so that many visitors come from afar to taste it. Organizers have long aimed to promote it as a possible Deco (Municipal Designation of Origin), an recognition that would further tie this fruit to the identity of the town. The festival is the perfect opportunity to taste it at its best, paired with traditional Ferrara peasant dishes.
The heart of the festival is the food stall, managed by committee volunteers. The menu offers local culinary specialties: cappellacci, gramigna alla boscaiola, mixed grilled meats, the unmissable prosciutto and melon, french fries, the typical pinzรฌn, and the house dessert. A simple and abundant table, telling the story of the generosity of the Emilian land.
Each evening of the festival is accompanied by live shows and music, with events that liven up the square until late at night. From concerts and musical tributes to pianobar and karaoke, the festival offers entertainment for all ages. For the little ones, inflatable games and free attractions are set up, making the event suitable for the whole family.
The Melon Festival coincides with the feast of the patron saint, Saint Anthony of Padua, celebrated on June 13th. On Sunday, alongside convivial moments, there is a religious dimension with Holy Mass and the traditional procession, a sign of the strong link between the civil and patronal feasts. It is this fusion of gastronomy, music, and popular devotion that gives the festival its authentic character.
More than just a gastronomic event, the Gavello Melon Festival is a moment of cohesion for the entire town: born to keep traditions alive and make the community even more united, it thrives thanks to the commitment of volunteers and the support of the Pro Loco of Bondeno. Visiting it means discovering the genuine soul of the Ferrara lowlands, amidst authentic flavors, hospitality, and village spirit.
