The spring concert of the miners' band of Prettau, in the Ahrntal valley
The Frühjahrskonzert der Knappenkapelle Prettau is the most anticipated musical event of the year for the small municipality of Prettau, the northernmost village in South Tyrol, located at the end of the Ahrntal (Valle Aurina) in the province of Bolzano. Every spring, traditionally on the Pentecost weekend, the local brass band takes the stage at the Kultursaal in Prettau to present the repertoire they have been preparing throughout the winter months.
The Knappenkapelle Prettau—literally the "miners' band"—carries the memory of Prettau as an ancient mining village in both its name and its uniform. The village has been linked for centuries to its copper mine (Kupferbergwerk), which was documented as early as the 15th century and employed a large part of the local male population for generations until its final closure in the 20th century. Today, the mine can be visited as the Provincial Mining Museum (Landesmuseum Bergbau). The musicians of the Knappenkapelle perform in their characteristic miners' costume (Bergmannstracht), keeping this identity alive during parades, band rallies, and concerts.
The spring concert represents the culmination of the season: after weeks of full-band and section rehearsals, the band offers a deliberately diverse program, alternating marches, polkas, and waltzes from the South Tyrolean and Alpine brass band tradition with more contemporary pieces, including film scores, modern arrangements, and impressive musical highlights. During these evenings, the village's cultural hall is filled with residents, guests, and music enthusiasts.
The Knappenkapelle Prettau is not only active during the Frühjahrskonzert: throughout the year, it accompanies the community's main religious and civil celebrations, participates in regional band rallies, and enlivens the village's music pavilion during the summer. However, the spring concert remains the event where the band truly shines, showcasing the level of excellence achieved and the deep bond between music, tradition, and the identity of this corner of South Tyrol.
Attending the Frühjahrskonzert is also an opportunity to discover Prettau and the upper Ahrntal: an unspoiled Alpine environment at the foot of the Western Tauern Alps, where the musical traditions of South Tyrolean Musikkapellen are still a vibrant part of the social fabric. An authentic occasion to experience the mountain culture of Trentino-South Tyrol far from the most crowded tourist routes.
The 2026 spring concert of the Knappenkapelle Prettau was held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, on the occasion of Pentecost Saturday, at 8:00 PM in the Kultursaal of Prettau. As per tradition, the musicians of the miners' band performed in their miners' costumes, presenting the repertoire prepared over the previous months. While the detailed program of individual pieces was not released online, the event confirmed the role of the Frühjahrskonzert as the highlight of the village's brass band season in the heart of the upper Ahrntal valley in South Tyrol.
The concert is held at the Kultursaal (cultural hall) of Prettau, in the province of Bolzano, in the upper Ahrntal valley.
Traditionally on a spring weekend around Pentecost, usually on a Saturday evening (8:00 PM).
By car: Prettau can be reached by traveling up the Ahrntal valley from Brunico and Campo Tures (Pusteria Valley road, then the Ahrntal road). By train: Brunico station on the Pusteria Valley line, then local bus towards the Ahrntal. It is recommended to check the exact date and time with the Municipality of Prettau (prettau.it) or the Knappenkapelle Prettau website.
