The Epiphany fire ritual in Aradeo
In Aradeo, a small town in the Province of Lecce in the heart of Salento, the eve of the Epiphany is celebrated with one of the most iconic winter events in Puglia: the Focara della Befana. On the night of January 5th, the entire town ignites with fire, as fòcare (bonfires) are raised at almost every crossroads, illuminating the village streets and warming the long night that precedes the arrival of the Befana.
The term fòcara, in the Salento dialect, refers to the large wood bonfire lit for a collective ritual. In Aradeo, this tradition takes the form of numerous piles of wood raised at street intersections, each tended by the families living nearby. As evening falls, the fires are lit one after another, and the town transforms into a grid of light and embers where people gather to chat, sing, and keep warm.
The Epiphany bonfire has roots in ancient, pre-Christian customs linked to the seasonal cycle. The flame is a symbol of purification and rebirth: burning the old year means leaving the past behind and inviting prosperity and good fortune for the year to come. Around the fire, the Aradeo community renews this collective gesture every year, blending sacred tradition with popular celebration.
The fòcare are more than just fires: the evening is accompanied by folk and modern music concerts, with melodies drifting through the illuminated streets. Pizzica, Salento rhythms, and contemporary repertoires provide the soundtrack to a night when the town stays awake, amidst the crackling flames, the scent of burning wood, and shared toasts. It is an occasion where locals of all ages, along with visitors, take part in one of the most deeply felt rituals of the local calendar.
The Focara della Befana places Aradeo within the great Salento tradition of ritual fires, which is widespread in many towns across the region between the end of the year and the Epiphany. For the Municipality of Aradeo, it is a defining event that concludes the Christmas festivities and showcases the historic center, offering those visiting Puglia in winter an authentic and evocative glimpse of Salento's folk culture.
On January 5, 2026, Aradeo renewed its Focara della Befana: as evening fell, bonfires were lit at the town's crossroads, illuminating the historic center on the night preceding the Epiphany. Around the fires, families gathered to bid farewell to the year just ended, in a ritual of purification and rebirth passed down from generation to generation.
The evening was accompanied by folk and modern music concerts, featuring Salento rhythms and contemporary repertoires. The event, confirmed in the 2026 Salento calendar, brought locals and visitors together around the fòcare, amidst the crackling flames and a shared festive atmosphere. Free admission.
