Four days of faith, tradition, and community at the Buoncammino Sanctuary in Altamura
In Altamura, in the heart of the Alta Murgia in the province of Bari, the Festival of the Sanctuary of Maria SS. del Buoncammino has become, in just a few years, one of the city's most heartfelt spring events. Born from the collaboration between Murum Aps, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buoncammino, and the Madonna del Buoncammino Association, the festival brings the sanctuary and its surrounding area to life for four days between late May and early June, involving believers and visitors of all ages.
The essence of the event is well summarized by the words of the sanctuary's rector, Father Giacomo Paris: a return to the authentic sense of community, where faith, tradition, and belonging meet. What makes this festival special is above all the role of the many young volunteers who commit themselves to its organization, a sign that the religious and popular roots of Altamura continue to speak to new generations and transform into concrete opportunities for service and participation.
The days are marked by a blend of spiritual moments and popular events: Eucharistic celebrations, rosaries, and pilgrimages, the evocative Marian candlelight procession with the painting of the Madonna, musical moments, the opening of stalls, and convivial occasions. Among the most anticipated events are the inaugural ceremony, the Holy Mass presided over by the bishop, and the traditional Truckers' Festival, with the blessing of the trucks that recalls the ancient bond between devotion to the Buoncammino and those who face the road every day.
The very title of the Madonna, invoked for the "good journey" (buon cammino), makes her the protector of wayfarers and travelers: hence the characteristic blessing of vehicles and heavy trucks that concludes the festivities. For centuries, the sanctuary has been a reference point for Altamura's devotion, distinct from the major patronal festivities that the city dedicates to the same Madonna in the summer. The Sanctuary Festival instead proposes itself as a more intimate and communal celebration, capable of uniting spirituality, popular culture, and neighborhood life.
The 2026 edition, the fourth of the event, confirmed the formula that combines Marian devotion and community celebration. Promoted by Murum Aps together with the Sanctuary and the Madonna del Buoncammino Association, it once again featured the city's young volunteers. Four intense days accompanied citizens, pilgrims, and visitors on a journey of spirituality, devotion, popular culture, and participation, with the sanctuary and the adjacent area animated by celebrations, stalls, and events for all ages.
The program also includes Eucharistic celebrations, rosaries, pilgrimages, musical moments, and popular events for all ages.
