The spring festival of the Sanctuary of San Damiano, blending faith, sport, and tradition
The Festival of the Madonna of March is one of the most cherished events in Cogliate, a town in the Brianza region of the province of Monza and Brianza. It takes place around the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary of San Damiano, a place of devotion located on the border with Ceriano Laghetto, with which the festival is traditionally shared. In 2026, the occasion takes on special significance: it marks the 130th anniversary of the construction of the altar in the sanctuary's chapel.
The festival spans over a week, from March 18 to 26, blending religious moments with popular celebration. The central weekend is the most packed: Saturday features the craft market, traditional games, a card game tournament, music, and a cabaret evening; Sunday is the main day, with the RunDamiano (a running race with a competitive course and a shorter one for families), a solemn mass, a community lunch, magic shows for children, and, in the evening, the evocative procession with the statue of the Madonna.
Throughout the festival, there are continuous rosaries and masses, accompanied by a charity raffle and food service. The Giuseppe Verdi Musical Corps accompanies the key moments, while the community of Cogliate gathers around its sanctuary in a spirit of participation that also involves the neighboring town of Ceriano Laghetto.
The Madonna of March is much more than a religious festival: it is an event of identity that marks the arrival of spring in Brianza, capable of uniting different generations through devotion, sport, and conviviality. An event that tells the deep bond between Cogliate and its sanctuary.
