Ten days of faith, music, and tradition for Monte Urano's patron saint
The Festival of Saint Michael the Archangel is the most important event in the calendar of Monte Urano, a town in the Province of Fermo known as the city of footwear, in the Marche region. For about ten days every May, the town gathers around its patron saint in a programme that combines the religious dimension with popular and festive celebrations, involving all eight city districts.
The spiritual core is the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, the 19th-century parish church overlooking Piazza della Libertà, next to the town hall and the clock tower. On the patron saint's day, the Solemn Holy Mass is celebrated, followed by the procession that winds through the historic centre, accompanied by the town band and concluded in the evening with a fireworks display.
The gastronomic soul of the festival is the Sagra de lu Vaccalà 'Mbriacu, one of the most beloved food festivals in the Fermo area, which transforms the Public Gardens into a large meeting point each year. The signature dish is cod prepared according to the traditional local recipe, alongside Marche specialities offered at the stands, accompanied by the convivial event "Monte Urano in Tavola" (Monte Urano at the Table).
The main Sunday is dedicated to the Saint Michael's Fair: from the early morning hours, the historic centre is filled with about a hundred stalls from the province and beyond, offering crafts, local products, clothing, and curiosities. It is one of the most attended traditional fairs in the area, a meeting point for the entire Tenna valley.
The evenings in Piazza della Libertà and the Public Gardens feature concerts, musical tributes, school performances, and choral reviews, in a programme that changes year by year and focuses on the participation of local associations and volunteers. The festival traditionally concludes with the lottery draw in the Public Gardens, a grand finale eagerly awaited by young and old.
For 2026, the patronal feast of Monte Urano confirmed its rich programme spread over ten days, from May 7 to 17.
The gastronomic aspect was entrusted to the 16th edition of the Sagra de lu Vaccalà 'Mbriacu in the Public Gardens, accompanied by the convivial event "Monte Urano in Tavola". On the religious front, the Holy Mass and the procession in honour of Saint Michael the Archangel were celebrated, starting from the parish church, followed by a fireworks display.
Among the musical events in Piazza della Libertà were the tribute show "Loredana è Mia", an homage to Loredana Bertè and Mia Martini, an evening with the band Just for Funk in the Public Gardens, a concert by the Premiato Corpo Bandistico Città di Monte Urano, and a performance by the schools "Da Sanremo a San Michele", as well as the choral review "Cori inCanto" in the Church of Saint Michael. The main Sunday featured the grand Saint Michael's Fair with about a hundred stalls in the historic centre, while the festival concluded with the lottery draw in the Public Gardens.
The events take place in the historic centre of Monte Urano (FM): Piazza della Libertà, the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, the Public Gardens, and the streets of the centre for the fair.
By car: take the A14 motorway exit for Porto Sant'Elpidio, then follow signs for Monte Urano (approx. 10 km). The nearest train station is Porto Sant'Elpidio on the Adriatic line, connected to the town by bus or taxi.
Access to the festival, concerts, and fair is free. Only food and drinks at the festival stalls and lottery tickets are chargeable.
For the fair day, it is advisable to arrive in the morning and park in the areas outside the historic centre, which is closed to traffic for the occasion.
