About Our Lady of Constantinople

On the third Sunday of May, Agnone, in Alto Molise, celebrates Our Lady of Constantinople with a religious festival rooted in ancient traditions. Devotion began in 1605 and is linked to the solemn vow of 1656, following the terrible plague. Preceded by a novena, the festival culminates in an evening procession with the beautiful icon of Our Lady through the town's streets, from the Capuchin church to Piazza XX Settembre, accompanied by orchestral music.

An ancient vow

The Festival of Our Lady of Constantinople in Agnone, in the province of Isernia, has its roots in 1605, when the first dedicated church was built. After the devastating plague of 1656, the parish of Sant'Emidio made a solemn vow to process annually to the Capuchin church to thank Our Lady: a vow that is renewed to this day, every third Sunday of May.

Novena and procession

The festival is preceded by a preparatory novena. Saturday evening is dedicated to the consecration of children to Our Lady, blessings, and light music. On Sunday, Masses are held throughout the day, leading up to the most anticipated moment: the evening procession with the beautiful icon of Our Lady, carried through the town's streets from the Capuchin church, concluding in Piazza XX Settembre amidst the sounds of orchestras.

Identity and tradition

The current church, dedicated to Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, was consecrated in 1997, a sign of the continuity of an unbroken devotion. The festival represents one of the most significant religious events of the year for the community of Agnone, intertwining historical memory, faith, and popular tradition in the heart of Alto Molise.
