On December 7th, the pre-alpine village celebrates its patron saint
In Cuasso al Monte, a municipality of just over three thousand inhabitants nestled among the woods and hills of Valceresio, in the Province of Varese, the Festa Patronale di Sant'Ambrogio (Patronal Festival of Saint Ambrose) is the event that brings the entire citizenry together. It is celebrated on December 7th, the same day that Milan and much of Lombardy celebrate the great 4th-century bishop, and it marks the beginning of the long Immaculate Conception holiday weekend.
Saint Ambrose is venerated here as the patron saint and protector of the Municipality. The devotion is rooted in the religious history of the territory, linked to the parish church dedicated to the saint. For the people of Cuasso, it is not just a liturgical commemoration: it is a way to come together, recognize themselves in a shared tradition, and pass on to the younger generations the sense of belonging to a pre-alpine village proud of its roots.
The festival takes place throughout the day on December 7th, from early morning until evening. The heart of the celebration is the religious services in the parish church, accompanied by moments of gathering that animate the town center, around the Town Hall in Via Roma. The event, free and open to all citizens, intertwines the solemnity of tradition with the community dimension that characterizes the patronal festivals of small municipalities in the pre-alpine Lombardy region.
Experiencing the patronal festival also means discovering Cuasso al Monte in its winter guise: the village, a starting point for numerous hiking routes towards Monte Poncione and the Parco delle Cinque Vette, offers an authentic atmosphere in December, far from mass tourism. An opportunity to discover a less-traveled corner of the Province of Varese, between the Prealps and the lakes.
The 2026 patronal festival of Cuasso al Monte takes place on Monday, December 7th, the feast day of Saint Ambrose, throughout the day: from 8:00 AM until 10:30 PM.
The program revolves around the religious services in the parish church dedicated to the patron saint and convivial moments in the town center, at the Town Hall in Via Roma. The event is free and open to all citizens.
