The festival of the patron saint of Morrone del Sannio

In the heart of Alto Molise, perched on a hill in the province of Campobasso, the village of Morrone del Sannio dedicates its most cherished festival of the year to its patron saint San Modesto. On October 2nd, the day begins with religious celebrations in the mother church and culminates in the procession that winds through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the marching band and the devotion of a community that, on this occasion, also welcomes back the many emigrants from Morrone who have returned for the event.

Between liturgy and village festival

Alongside the moment of faith, the occasion retains all the flavor of a traditional Molise folk festival. The streets are decorated with the typical illuminated arches found in Southern Italy's patron saint festivals, while the market with its stalls lines the village streets, attracting visitors from neighboring towns. A stage is set up in Piazza San Modesto for evening musical performances, and there are also amusement rides for the little ones, completing the festive atmosphere.

A village to discover

Morrone del Sannio is a village rich in history: here lie the ruins of the monastery associated with the Blessed Roberto da Salle, a favorite disciple of Pope Celestine V, a revered figure whom the community remembers every May 19th. Visiting the village during the San Modesto festival means experiencing the most authentic identity of this corner of inland Molise, where religious and peasant traditions continue to mark the rhythm of life.
