The patron saint's festival in Val Graveglia, with procession, fireworks, and Ligurian flavours
In the Municipality of Ne, the heart of Val Graveglia in the hinterland of Chiavari (Metropolitan City of Genoa), the feast of San Giovanni Battista around June 24th is the most important patronal anniversary. A festival that combines religious devotion with the promotion of the agricultural and gastronomic traditions of a valley rich in mining and agricultural history.
The religious program culminates in the solemn procession and fireworks, accompanied by rites, shows, and workshops. It is a community festival that brings together the inhabitants of the various villages and hamlets of the valley, in a spirit of participation that is renewed each year.
The gastronomic dimension is central: local stands and restaurants offer the typical specialties of Val Graveglia, such as testaroli al pesto, pan martin, penella, and the Zerli onion jam, an identity product of the valley. There are also exhibitions of traditional agricultural tools, craft markets, and conferences on cultivation techniques, highlighting the authentic character of the event. For those who want to discover the most genuine Ligurian hinterland, the San Giovanni festival in Ne is a precious opportunity.
The 2026 edition of the Festa Patronale di San Giovanni Battista takes place from June 20 to 24. For 2026, due to road difficulties caused by landslides, the festival will be held in the Statale di Ne hamlet instead of the traditional village of Botasi.
Key moments include the solemn procession on June 23rd and the fireworks on June 24th, accompanied by religious rites, shows, and workshops. The gastronomic offering highlights the specialties of Val Graveglia — testaroli al pesto, pan martin, penella, Zerli onion jam — with themed menus in local restaurants, as well as exhibitions of agricultural tools and craft markets.
Val Graveglia can be reached from Chiavari by driving up the valley (about 20-30 minutes by car). From the A12 motorway, take the Chiavari or Lavagna exit.
