Gallarate celebrates its patron saint, protector of travellers, with a blessing of cars and a solemn mass in the basilica
San Cristoforo is the patron saint of Gallarate, a city in the Alto Milanese region, province of Varese. As the protector of travellers and motorists, he is celebrated on July 25th with events involving the entire community, blending the religious and civil aspects that characterise Italian patron saint festivals.
One of the most distinctive moments is the blessing of vehicles, held in the market area of Via Torino. This is a tangible sign of the link between the saint and his role as protector of those who travel: car drivers, motorcyclists, and truckers participate to receive a blessing for their vehicles.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn mass celebrated in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. During the service, the Municipality offers a votive candle to the patron saint, following an ancient tradition that connects the city administration to popular devotion. The day concludes with vespers and a solemn blessing to the city.
The San Cristoforo commemoration coincides with the liveliest part of Gallarate's summer: the conclusion of the Gallarate Summer Sound brings music and entertainment to the piazza, making July 25th a day when devotion to the patron saint merges with the city's festivities, strengthening the community's sense of belonging.
The 2026 festivities for San Cristoforo are concentrated between July 24th and 25th. On July 24th, the blessing of vehicles takes place in the Via Torino market area, with a moment of prayer. On July 25th, the patron saint's day, the solemn mass is held in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta with the offering of a votive candle by the Municipality, followed in the evening by vespers and the solemn blessing to the city. The day coincides with the closing evening of the Gallarate Summer Sound.
