Returning to roots in the Croatian village of Filič
The Festa dell'Emigrante in San Felice del Molise, in the province of Campobasso, is a summer event dedicated to the many citizens of the town who have emigrated abroad. The village, known to its inhabitants by the Croatian name Filič, has a large diaspora and in July welcomes back those returning for holidays, transforming their return into a true community celebration.
San Felice del Molise is one of the three Croatian-Molise speaking communities in Italy, a legacy of ancient settlements by populations from the other side of the Adriatic. The festival is an opportunity to rediscover this identity through language, songs, and cuisine, with typical dishes such as sagne mbottite, ventricina, and the dessert bukshkarun.
Among the customs linked to the village calendar is also the bonfire on May 10th for Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, a sign of the village's deep popular religiosity. The Festa dell'Emigrante fits into this fabric of traditions, renewing every summer the bond between the village and its children scattered around the world.
In 2026, San Felice del Molise renews the Festa dell'Emigrante, the summer event dedicated to the village's citizens who have emigrated worldwide. In the historic centre of Filič, in the province of Campobasso, the day celebrates the return to roots with convivial moments and the town's Slavic-Molise gastronomic traditions.
The exact date for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Municipality and local associations closer to the event.
