Bread, Faith, and Community

In Gildone, a small village in the province of Campobasso (Molise), the Festa del Pane (Bread Festival) is one of the most cherished events of the year. It celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua and the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is configured as a "long festival," involving the entire community in the weeks of preparation and culminating in mid-June.

Blessed Bread and the Monacelli

The heart of the festival is the blessed bread, shaped into artistic forms and decorated with freshly cut lilies. Women carry it in their hands and, above all, on their heads, in baskets weighing from a few hundred grams to several kilograms, in a striking procession. The community participates by age groups: the monacelli (children) follow the 'tredicina' (thirteen days of prayer) and the procession wearing the habit of Saint Anthony; teenagers gather wood for the bonfire; girls collect flowers for the 'infiorata' (flower carpet) that adorns streets and squares. After Mass, the blessed bread is distributed to the faithful.

Tradition and Great Music

Alongside religious rites, the festival offers crafts, gastronomic stands, and entertainment. The event is organized by the Associazione Festa del Pane di Gildone (Gildone Bread Festival Association) together with the Pro Loco (local tourism board). In 2026, the program is enhanced by an exceptional event: the free concert by Fausto Leali, the iconic voice of Italian song, in Piazza Largo Vittorio.
