Flavours, traditions and ancient crafts of the Oltrepò Pavese
The Festa d'Autunno (Autumn Festival) is the most anticipated event in Borgoratto Mormorolo, a small hilly municipality in the Province of Pavia. With over thirty years of history, it takes place on a Sunday in October and transforms the town centre into a journey dedicated to the peasant traditions of the Oltrepò Pavese, with a different theme chosen each year as the common thread of the day.
Through the village streets, you'll find a market, exhibitions, and demonstrations of old-fashioned crafts, from grain processing to bread making. There's also a parade of vintage tractors, a symbol of the agricultural heritage of these lands, alongside traditional wooden games and activities designed for both adults and children.
The gastronomic aspect is one of the reasons for the festival's success: polenta with braised meat or gorgonzola, cooked salami, sausages, 'schita' (a type of buckwheat pancake), roasted chestnuts, and desserts, all accompanied by the wines of the Oltrepò Pavese. Lunch is served under a marquee, with covered seating and vegetarian options available.
The day, organised by the Pro Loco of Borgoratto Mormorolo, combines street performances, live music, exhibitions, and cultural moments such as a guided tour of the Pieve di Mormorolo and a presentation of the area's hiking trails. A free shuttle service connects the car parks to the town centre. More than just a simple 'sagra' (local festival), the Festa d'Autunno is a living tale of the rural identity of the Oltrepò and the Apennine Lombardy.
For the 2026 edition, Borgoratto Mormorolo renews its Festa d'Autunno, now in its 33rd year. The town centre will once again come alive with the market, demonstrations of old-fashioned crafts, a parade of vintage tractors, and traditional games, while stalls will offer polenta, chestnuts, local products, and wines from the Oltrepò Pavese. As every year, the festival will have a central theme, announced by the Pro Loco along with the detailed programme in the weeks leading up to the event.
The detailed programme for the 33rd edition in 2026 will be published by the Pro Loco of Borgoratto Mormorolo. Based on the established structure of recent editions, the day will include:
