About Festa Alpina di San Bortolo

In August, on the heights of Castelcucco, at the foot of Monte Grappa, the locality of San Bortolo comes alive again with the Festa Alpina. Born over forty years ago from a small group of Alpini who climbed to the sanctuary, it is today a community festival that attracts families and young people. Between flag-raising, Mass and blessing of agricultural vehicles on Ferragosto, and a mountain cuisine with 'musso' (mule meat) and spit-roast, over fifty volunteers animate an event that intertwines memory, faith, and conviviality.

A festival born from the Alpini

The Festa Alpina di San Bortolo is held in the summer in the locality of the same name at high altitude, in the Municipality of Castelcucco, in the province of Treviso, at the foot of Monte Grappa. Its origin dates back over forty years, when a small group of Alpini climbed to the sanctuary bringing wine and provisions with them: from that simple gesture, a festival was born that over time has grown to involve families, boys, and young people from the community.

Ferragosto at high altitude

The heart of the festival is the Ferragosto weekend, marked by moments that combine alpine tradition with religious dimension: on the morning of August 15th, the flag-raising ceremony takes place, followed by Holy Mass and the traditional blessing of agricultural vehicles. The cuisine is the genuine one of the Venetian mountains, with specialties such as musso and spiedo (spit-roast), served by volunteers under the marquee.

Three weekends of tradition

The festival is part of a calendar of summer events that liven up the San Bortolo locality for several consecutive weekends in August — including the Alpini Festival, the AVIS Festival, and the Hunter's Festival — thanks to the commitment of over fifty volunteers. An example of the vitality of the foothill communities of the Trevigiano area, where the spirit of association continues to pass down rituals and flavours from generation to generation.
