The crochet rose flower festival for Corpus Christi
The Ferrandina Flower Festival is almost unique in Italy. While traditional flower festivals create their carpets with fresh flower petals, here the artists of the Matera village work for months on crocheted roses, ball of yarn after ball of yarn, until they compose a spread of wool flowers that accompanies the procession of Corpus Christi.
The project originates from the wool workshop of the Associazione Donna 2000 & Amici and involves numerous women from the community. Each rose is an offering: a symbol of devotion, prayer, and promise. The flowers are neither bought nor sold, but are donated for a moment of faith and spiritual sharing, in what has been described as "a collective and tireless rite of art and devotion".
On the day of the solemnity, the wool roses are arranged to form a carpet laid out before the Blessed Sacrament, which passes in solemn procession through the streets of Ferrandina. It is the culmination of a choral work that unites generations and renews the bond between the community and its religious tradition every year.
The initiative is part of the life of the Municipality of Ferrandina, a village in the Province of Matera founded in the early 16th century, and represents one of the most heartfelt moments of the local religious calendar, capable of attracting attention even beyond the town's borders due to its originality.
For Corpus Christi 2026, set for Sunday, June 7, the wool rose flower festival returns to Ferrandina. The artists from the Associazione Donna 2000 & Amici workshop arrange the crocheted flowers to form the carpet over which the procession of the Blessed Sacrament passes.
The liturgical program for Corpus Christi 2026 (Mass and procession times) will be announced by the parish in the days preceding the solemnity.
The usual schedule includes:
How to get there: Ferrandina can be reached via the SS407 Basentana, Ferrandina exit.
Admission: religious and free event, along the streets of the center.
When: on Corpus Christi day, in the afternoon, during the procession.
