Bolognola's patronal feast with the famous Sausage Festival
On June 1st, the small village of Bolognola, in the province of Macerata, celebrates its patron saint Saint Fortunatus. Clinging to an altitude of 1,060 meters in the Marche Apennines, in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains National Park, Bolognola is the highest and at the same time the smallest municipality in all of the Marche region: a handful of stone houses, the Pintura hamlet with its ski resorts, and a panorama stretching towards the Acquasanta Valley and Pizzo Tre Vescovi. In such a close-knit community, the patron saint's feast is one of the most heartfelt events of the year.
The focal point of the celebrations is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, which overlooks the central square of the village. Rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in 1937, after an avalanche destroyed the original Lombard-era building on the night of February 2nd-3rd, 1934, it houses a painting dedicated to the patron saint on the right altar: Saint Fortunatus is depicted between Saint Nicholas of Bari and Saint Michael the Archangel. The solemn mass and devotional moments that open the festive day take place here.
Traditionally, the Sausage Festival accompanies the religious dimension: food stalls and stands are set up along the village streets, where you can taste and buy Bolognola sausage and other typical products from the Macerata mountains. It's an opportunity to discover the flavors of a territory where the economy has always been linked to livestock farming and shepherding: pecorino and goat cheeses, cured meats, honey, mushrooms, and chestnuts tell the story of the peasant culture of the Sibillini.
The feast of Saint Fortunatus is also a good excuse to discover Bolognola and its surroundings. The village is the starting point for numerous hiking trails among the most evocative in the Sibillini Mountains, popular in both summer and winter. Participating in the patronal feast means experiencing a small Apennine community in the Marche region up close, amidst popular devotion, mountain gastronomy, and authentic hospitality.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of the Patron Saint Fortunatus in Bolognola takes place on Monday, June 1, 2026. The day combines, as tradition dictates, the religious celebration at the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and the Sausage Festival, with banquets and food stalls dedicated to local sausage and typical products from the Macerata mountain village.
The detailed program for the 2026 patronal feast (times of religious services and food stalls) has not been published online by the Municipality. The day follows the traditional structure: religious celebrations in honor of Saint Fortunatus at the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and the Sausage Festival with food stalls and stands where you can taste and buy Bolognola sausage and typical mountain products. For updated information, you can contact the Municipality of Bolognola.
