Feast of the Blessed Virgin Assumption of Morterone

Ferragosto in Italy's Smallest Village

There is a corner of Lombardy where Ferragosto retains its most ancient meaning: Morterone, in the province of Lecco, Italy's least populated municipality with just a few dozen residents, nestled in Valsassina on the slopes of the Resegone mountain at over a thousand meters in altitude. Here, on August 15th, the feast of the patron saint, the Blessed Virgin Assumption, is celebrated. This event draws residents, holidaymakers, and many former Morterone residents returning for the occasion.

The Eve's Bonfires

The feast begins on the evening of August 14th, when traditional bonfires are lit in the various hamlets of the village. It is a convivial and community event, often accompanied by a charity tombola (bingo) whose proceeds support the parish. The fire illuminating the mountain has always been the signal that the feast has arrived.

The Mass and Procession on August 15th

On Ferragosto day, the heart of the celebration is the solemn Mass in the historic church dedicated to the Virgin Assumption, a building of Romanesque origins housing a 1742 altarpiece by Francesco Quaglio. At the end of the service, the procession begins: the faithful accompany the 17th-century statue of the Madonna through the village streets, stopping at the chapels decorated for the occasion, amidst prayers and Marian chants.

In such a small municipality, the Assumption feast is much more than a religious holiday: it is the moment when the entire community of Morterone, in the Province of Lecco, comes together around its identity and roots, in a mountain setting of rare beauty.
