The three patron Saint Martyrs of Trecastagni celebrated with votive candles, pilgrimages, and fireworks
The Feast of Saints Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino is the primary devotional event for the Town of Trecastagni, an Etnean village in the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily. According to tradition, the three brother Martyrs, originally from Vaste, were martyred in Lentini in 253 AD. The Sanctuary of Trecastagni stands on the very site associated with their journey, becoming a destination for a cult that attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.
The most iconic symbol of the festival is the votive cerei: massive, elaborately decorated candles carried on shoulders through the village streets as a sign of gratitude to the Saints. Many devotees reach Trecastagni on foot, some barefoot, joining pilgrimages that converge at the Sanctuary. It is a manifestation of popular faith deeply rooted in the identity of the Trecastagni community and the entire Etnean territory.
The festivities traditionally take place in May and span several days. The opening is announced by twenty-one cannon shots from the Forte Mulino a Vento, while the eve marks the inauguration of the Piano Sciarelle Fair. Recurring events include:
Devotion to the three brother martyrs does not end in May: on the first Sunday of September, Trecastagni commemorates the passage of the Saints with the exposition of the statues, the second annual appointment of the patronal cult.
Visiting the Sant'Alfio Feast means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic expressions of Sicilian popular religiosity: a blend of the sacred and the profane where the procession of the cerei, fireworks, and the fair coexist in the unique setting of the slopes of Mount Etna.
In Trecastagni, the festivities for the three Saint Martyrs will take place from May 5 to 18, 2026. On Tuesday, May 5, at 5:00 PM, the cerei will depart from the Sanctuary to travel through the village streets.
On Wednesday, May 6, at 9:00 PM in Piazza Marconi, the 15th edition of the Great Cerei Gala will take place, attended by religious and civil authorities, featuring a fireworks display by Pirotecnica Torrisi Costantino and Etna Pyro; guest of the evening is David Simone Vinci, hosted by Ornella Ponzio. Father Orazio Greco and Mayor Giuseppe Messina will be in attendance.
Accompanying events include the Piano Sciarelle Fair, the Music Festival, and the pyromusical competition between local districts.
Trecastagni is located on the southeastern slope of Mount Etna, about 20 km from Catania. By car, it can be reached via the SP4 and the Etnean foothills roads; the village is about 30 minutes from Catania-Fontanarossa Airport. During the festivities, the center is subject to traffic restrictions and diversions: it is advisable to park in the outer areas and reach the Sanctuary and Piazza Marconi on foot.
The main festivities take place in May, with the solemn day on May 10th. A second devotional moment is held on the first Sunday of September.
Religious celebrations, processions, and public square performances are free and open to the public.
