In the hamlet of Fondachello, a small village overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast and part of the Valdina municipality in the province of Messina (Sicily), June 24th is the most important date of the year. It is the day dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the community's patron saint and the namesake of the village's 20th-century parish church, which falls under the vicariate of Spadafora within the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela.

A deeply felt devotion

The festival blends religious observance with popular tradition in a celebration that has marked the community's summer for generations. Solemn liturgical services in the Church of Saint John the Baptist lead up to the heart of the day: the procession of the Saint's statue, carried on shoulders through the streets of Fondachello, winding between the village houses and along the coastline, accompanied by the traditional Città di Spadafora marching band. Residents eagerly await the passage of the simulacrum, stepping out to their doorsteps to accompany the Saint with prayers and devotion.

The Feast of Saint John the Baptist has always been a time for connection and cohesion in Fondachello, a hamlet of a few hundred inhabitants where the bond with faith and tradition remains vibrant. In recent years, the community has experienced particularly significant moments: in 2025, during the days dedicated to the patron saint, honorary citizenship was conferred upon Father Antonino Merlino in recognition of his nearly thirty years of pastoral service in the parish.
