Feast of Our Lady of Tears

The day of Treviglio's patron saint

February 28th is the most important date in the city calendar of Treviglio (province of Bergamo): it celebrates Our Lady of Tears, the city's patron saint. The feast commemorates the Miracle of 1522, when—according to tradition—an image of the Madonna shed tears, stopping the troops of the French general Odet de Foix, Viscount of Lautrec, and saving Treviglio from being sacked.

Between faith and civic identity

The morning of February 28th opens with the solemn Mass at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tears. Following this, at the Teatro Nuovo Treviglio, the civic ceremony is held with the awarding of city honors: the "San Martino d'Oro" medal and the "Madonna delle Lacrime" awards, recognizing individuals and entities that have distinguished themselves for the community. The feast involves the entire city, with special openings of Treviglio's historical sites.

An anniversary that is renewed

Every year the anniversary of the Miracle is renewed: in 2026, the 504th anniversary will be celebrated. The patronal feast is the centerpiece of a broader program, "Treviglio in festa," which in the days around February 28th includes the fair, carnival, and other cultural initiatives in the historic center.
