Extraordinary openings and guided tours in the city of Leopardi
The FAI Spring Days are one of the most beloved cultural events in Italy: for an entire weekend, the Fondo Ambiente Italiano opens the doors of palaces, churches, theaters, gardens, and historic residences often inaccessible to the public. In Recanati, in the province of Macerata, this edition focuses on some of the symbolic places of the Leopardi city, guiding visitors on a journey that intertwines art, history, and poetry.
The Persiani Theatre, commissioned in 1823 by Count Monaldo Leopardi, father of the poet Giacomo, is one of the architectural gems of the historic center: the visit recounts its history and curiosities, enriched by a captivating moment of danced poetry curated by the Àlima aps Association.
The former Monastery of the Assumption, now home to the I.R.C.E.R. Assunta Foundation, is a complex normally not accessible to the public. The tour leads to the discovery of the building's history and some precious artistic testimonies, including a fresco attributed to Federico Zuccari, with a short musical interlude by the "Beniamino Gigli" Civic Music School.
The Garden on the Hill of the Infinite, the only FAI property in the Marche region, is also featured: the famous garden dotted with cypress and fruit trees that inspired Leopardi's most famous verses, where poetry-dedicated activities are offered.
The heart of the initiative are the Apprentice Ciceros, students from the "G. Leopardi" Classical High School in Recanati and other local institutes, specially trained to welcome and guide visitors. They are the ones who tell the stories of the places, in a project that combines heritage conservation and the education of young people.
The FAI Spring Days involve hundreds of cities across Italy every year, with thousands of volunteers. In Recanati, the event takes on a special flavor thanks to the indissoluble link with the figure of Giacomo Leopardi and the Marche landscape that fueled his inspiration. Participation involves a free contribution to support FAI's mission in caring for and enhancing Italy's cultural and landscape heritage.
For its 34th edition, the 2026 FAI Spring Days enlivened Recanati on March 21st and 22nd with a program dedicated to art and poetry. The event, part of a national initiative that involved hundreds of Italian cities, offered three extraordinary openings in the Leopardi city, accompanied by the Apprentice Ciceros from the "G. Leopardi" Classical High School.
