The historic barrel-rolling race between the districts of Riposto
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Eustachio Barrel Rolling Palio is one of the most distinctive events in Riposto, a seaside town on the Ionian coast in the province of Catania, Sicily. Every year, the historic center transforms into an open-air stage where teams of spingibotti (barrel rollers), representing the various districts and hamlets, compete for the title by pushing enormous empty barrels along a city course. It is a celebration of community, sport, and tradition that draws crowds and curious onlookers from across the Etna region.
The event is named after Don Eustachio, Duke of Laviefuille, a Viceroy of Sicily who, in the 18th century, built a fortress near the current port of Riposto to protect his vineyards from Saracen pirate raids. The Palio symbolically re-enacts that defense of the "nectar of the gods," inextricably linking the festival to the area's winemaking vocation and the memory of Riposto as the historic wine port of Mount Etna.
Inspired by the spirit of the great Italian palios, the event features parades and competitions between representatives of the historic districts: Scariceddu (Carmine), San Giuseppe, Immacolata, Matrice (San Pietro), Quartirello, Altarello, Torre Archirafi, Archi, and Carrubba. Before the race, flag-wavers perform, and the districts are decorated with flowers, drapes, and flags in their respective colors.
The winning district receives an artistic trophy, guarded with pride from year to year, along with a prize and a supply of wine offered by sponsors; a jury also awards a prize for the best-decorated district. The goal of the Pro Loco of Riposto is to pass on the art of barrel makingโonce a thriving activity in the cityโto new generations, bringing the hamlets closer to the community and promoting local products.
The Eustachio Barrel Rolling Palio is much more than just a race: it is an opportunity to rediscover the identity of Riposto, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Catania, and to celebrate the deep bond between the village, the sea, and the wine of Mount Etna.
