An evening of extraordinary opening and theatrical tours in the heart of Svevo Castle
The European Museum Night is the European cultural initiative that, on a single spring evening, opens the doors of museums and cultural sites in the evening with symbolic or free admission. In Porto Recanati, in the Province of Macerata and in the heart of the Marche Region, the event takes place in the spaces of the Svevo Castle Museum Complex, overlooking the Riviera del Conero.
Svevo Castle, built in the 15th century to defend the coast from pirate raids, today houses two museum institutions: the Attilio Moroni Municipal Art Gallery and the Archaeological Museum of the Potenza Valley. The art gallery, born from the donation of over one hundred and fifty works by Professor Attilio Moroni, holds Italian and foreign paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, with works by artists such as Gino Severini, Filippo De Pisis, Giovanni Fattori, and Silvestro Lega, as well as a room dedicated to the local painter Biagio Biagetti.
The distinctive feature of the Porto Recanati edition is the theatricalized tour inspired by living history: not a simple evening opening, but an immersive journey in which actors and guides bring the history of the castle to life through scenes, stories, and reconstructions. Visitors come into direct contact with historically faithful reproductions of ancient objects, from arrows to crossbows, from oil lamps to Etruscan bucchero jewelry, to Roman and medieval writing supports.
The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of Porto Recanati as part of the national review of the Ministry of Culture, with the contribution of civil service volunteers. The strong appeal of the experience, which consistently sells out, confirms how much the public appreciates a different and engaging way of experiencing the museum, where history is not just observed but traversed.
The 2026 edition of the European Museum Night in Porto Recanati was held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, with the Svevo Castle opening from 9:30 PM. Visitors could participate in a theatricalized museum tour inspired by living history, during which actors and guides animated the castle's spaces.
Among the scenic reconstructions were the investiture of Rainaldo di Urslingen, the story of Cupid and Psyche, the procession of the Grail, and the tale of Paolo and Francesca. Visitors could observe and touch faithful reproductions of arrows, crossbows, oil lamps, and Etruscan bucchero jewelry. The event, free and by reservation, was sold out with over a hundred attendees in total.
