The Renaissance Carnival in the heart of the Este court, in Ferrara
Forget the floats and confetti: the Este Carnival is something else. In Ferrara, a UNESCO World Heritage city and former capital of the Este duchy, Carnival is dressed in velvets, brocades, and courtly atmospheres. Organized by the Ente Palio CittĂ di Ferrara and its Contrade, it brings to life for a weekend in February the Ferrara of the Dukes, when the city was one of the most refined cultural centers in Europe.
Through the streets of the historic center, in the squares, and within the walls of the Este Castle, you'll encounter courtiers, ladies, princes, storytellers, and armed men: not generic extras, but a reconstruction curated by the Foundation's historical-artistic commission, which each year chooses a theme and an emblematic figure from Ferrara's Renaissance era.
The heart of the event is the historical parades that cross the center: costumed groups depart from different points of the city—from Piazza Castello, from Porta Paola, from Piazza Trento Trieste—to converge in Piazza del Municipio, the ancient ducal court. They are accompanied by flag bearers, musicians, historical dance performances, tournaments, and skirmishes, theatrical re-enactments, and Renaissance banquets set up by the Contrade.
The Este Carnival is also the time when the city "reopens" the season of the Palio di Ferrara, considered the oldest palio in the world: the eight Contrade return to the stage with their costumes and insignia, awaiting the Magnificent Parade and the May races.
Alongside the parades, the Carnival offers a program of conferences and meetings in prestigious locations such as the Sala della Musica and the Ariostea Library, dedicated to the figure chosen for the year and the historical, musical, and artistic context of the Este court. It is this dual register—popular and learned—that makes the event unique among Italian carnivals.
The event takes place in the historic center of Ferrara (Province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna), between Piazza del Municipio, Piazza Castello, and the surrounding streets, usually on a weekend in February. The symbolic opening is entrusted to the placement of the traditional Carnival mask, the Begosso, on the Clock Tower. All public events are free entry and designed for adults, teenagers, and children.
The Este Carnival 2026 was dedicated to Beatrice d'Este, Duchess of Milan and Renaissance patron, remembered for her influence on the arts, fashion, and court life between Ferrara and Milan. The event, organized by the Ente Palio CittĂ di Ferrara, symbolically opened on January 10th with the placement of the Carnival mask (the Begosso) on the Clock Tower.
The program combined spectacular moments—historical parades, dance performances, tournaments, and a theatrical re-enactment—with a cultural journey of conferences dedicated to Beatrice's figure and court music. Due to bad weather, some of Saturday's street activities were scaled back, but the heart of the festival, between Porta Paola and Piazza del Municipio, animated Ferrara's historic center.
Note: due to bad weather, some of Saturday, February 14th's street activities were canceled or reduced.
By train: Ferrara station is on the Bologna–Padova–Venice line, about a 15-minute walk from the historic center. By car: exit at Ferrara Nord or Ferrara Sud on the A13 Bologna–Padova highway; it's best to leave your car in the parking lots near the city walls and walk to the squares.
All public events of the Este Carnival are free to enter. For information: Ente Palio CittĂ di Ferrara, Corso Porta Reno 11 (Torre dell'Orologio), tel. 0532 751263 / 0532 752207, [email protected], www.paliodiferrara.it.
The historic center of Ferrara is entirely walkable and largely pedestrianized: wear comfortable shoes. The Este Castle and the Cathedral are worth a visit before or after the parades.
