About Esquilino Jazz

Every July, the gardens of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II transform into an open-air stage. The Esquilino Jazz Festival brings twelve nights of free live concerts to the Horti Magici, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Contemporary jazz, Brazilian rhythms, Argentine tango, Latin jazz, and Balkan and Afro-inspired sounds blend under the trees of the capital's most cosmopolitan district, in a project that uses music to bridge diverse cultures.

Jazz in Rome's most cosmopolitan district

The Esquilino Jazz Festival is one of the most original summer events in Rome, Lazio: twelve nights of completely free live music hosted in the Horti Magici, the green space at the heart of the Nicola Calipari Gardens within Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. We are in the Esquilino district, the most multicultural neighborhood in the capital, where communities from all over the world have lived side-by-side for decadesโ€”a setting that the festival embraces and reflects in its programming.

A grassroots festival

The event was launched in 2023 by the Gatsby Cafรจ in collaboration with the Horti Magici project, with a simple goal: to restore the square to evening use as a peaceful, shared space through music. In just a few editions, the festival has grown into a staple of the 'Estate Romana' (Roman Summer) calendar, with a loyal audience filling the seats arranged between the flowerbeds and the Art Nouveau 'casina' that serves as a natural backdrop for the concerts.

Jazz as an open language

The hallmark of the Esquilino Jazz Festival is cross-pollination. The lineup goes beyond traditional jazz, building each evening around a different theme: original jazz, pop-jazz, Brazilian sounds, Latin jazz, Argentine tango, Balkan influences, Afro-jazz, and R&B or electronic fusions. This curatorial choice is perfectly suited to the location: in a square where dozens of languages are spoken, jazz is presented for what it has always beenโ€”a hybrid music capable of engaging with distant traditions.

Italian musicians and international guests

The program alternates between local Roman talent and international acts. Highlights from the latest edition included British saxophonist Trevor Watts, a historic figure in European improvisation, in a duo with percussionist Jamie Harris, and pianist and composer Pino Jodice with his Morricone in Jazz project. They were joined by musicians such as Pasquale Innarella, Fabrizio Mocata, Stefano Rossini, and Gianni Oddi, in ensembles ranging from trios to sextets.

A free and accessible festival

  • Free admission to all concerts, no booking or tickets required
  • Evening concerts from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, scheduled to avoid the Roman summer heat
  • Open-air venue with on-site refreshments available
  • Daily programming throughout the festival duration, including holidays

What to see nearby

Piazza Vittorio is an ideal hub for discovering a less touristy side of Rome. A short walk away, you will find the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Esquilino Market with its international stalls, the 17th-century 'Porta Magica' (Magic Gate) kept within the gardens, and the monumental complex of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. Visitors from out of town can easily combine a concert evening with a stroll through the Monti district or a visit to the Baths of Diocletian, both reachable on foot in about fifteen minutes.

Esquilino Jazz โ€” edition 2026

The fourth edition of the Esquilino Jazz Festival brought twelve consecutive nights of free concerts to the Horti Magici in Piazza Vittorio, from July 1st to 12th, 2026, every evening from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM. A journey built night by night around different themes: original jazz, pop-jazz, Brazil, Argentine tango, Latin jazz, Balkan and Afro-jazz sounds, culminating in a grand finale featuring British saxophonist Trevor Watts.

Twelve nights, twelve ensembles

The 2026 edition marked the festival's most significant growth: from the eight nights of 2025, it expanded to twelve consecutive events, from Wednesday, July 1st, to Sunday, July 12th, all with free admission at the Horti Magici of the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II Gardens. The consistent schedule, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, allowed local residents and visitors to enjoy the concerts during the coolest hours of the day.

The management designed the lineup as a true curatorial journey: a different musical language each night to showcase jazz's ability to engage with distant cultures and traditions. Alongside local Roman groups, the festival hosted a historic name in European improvisation, British saxophonist Trevor Watts, and the Ennio Morricone tribute by Pino Jodice.
