The art of the nativity scene tells the Passion of Christ in the village of Civitanova Alta
The Easter Nativity Scenes Exhibition – Passion of Christ is one of the most characteristic events of spring in Civitanova Marche, in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region. The event takes place in the charming historic village of Civitanova Alta, at the San Francesco Multimedia Space, and reverses the usual association between nativity scenes and Christmas: here the dioramas do not tell the Nativity, but the Passion of Christ, from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion, passing through the Procession and the episodes of Holy Week.
The exhibition was born from the passion of some local master nativity scene makers, including the significant contribution of the Broglia family of Civitanova Alta, and has consolidated over the years to become a true unique in the Italian panorama. The displayed nativity scenes — some of which have also been presented in the Vatican in the past — impress with the artisanal care of the details, the skillful use of lights, and the symbolic power of the scenes depicted. Alongside the dioramas, complementary exhibitions of painting, sculpture, and artist eggs enrich the exhibition path.
Visiting the exhibition means traversing an emotional and contemplative itinerary, where the artistic dimension merges with the religious one. The event, with free admission, is organized by Pro Loco Civitanova Alta APS with the patronage of the Municipality of Civitanova Marche and is part of the rich calendar of initiatives that animate the historic center during the Easter period.
The village of Civitanova Alta boasts a solid tradition of nativity scenes, so much so that it is promoted as "the city of nativity scenes". This Easter exhibition represents its natural evolution, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to rediscover the streets and palaces of the historic center in a setting of great charm, between sacred art and timeless atmospheres.
The fifth edition of the Nativity Scenes Exhibition was inaugurated on March 29, 2026, in the presence of the Councilor for Tourism Mara Orazi, the President of the Municipal Council Roberto Tiberi, and the Regional Councilor Pierpaolo Borroni. The exhibition remained open to the public from April 2 to 6, 2026, at the San Francesco Multimedia Space in Civitanova Alta.
The display, curated by master Antonino Savarese with the collaboration of the Broglia family, guided visitors through a suggestive itinerary dedicated to the Passion of Christ. The exhibition spaces also hosted the complementary exhibition "The Beauty That Transcends Death", featuring paintings, sculptures, and artist eggs, curated by the U.C.A.I. section of Civitanova Marche.
