The Visconti fortress of Romano opens its doors for the National Days of Castles
The Rocca Viscontea in Romano di Lombardia (Province of Bergamo, Lombardy) stands on the northeastern side of the ancient city walls, a testament to its original defensive function. Characterized by four towers, an inner courtyard, and a drawbridge, it is one of the most fascinating fortresses in the Bergamo plain. On the occasion of the National Days of Castles, Palaces and Medieval Villages, promoted by the Italian Institute of Castles, the Fortress opens its doors to the public.
The heart of the initiative is the guided tours, held at set times (usually at 10:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 2:30 PM, and 3:30 PM). Each tour lasts about an hour and a half, with a maximum of twenty participants, and leads visitors inside the Fortress, up the towers, and along the walkways, revealing normally inaccessible corners and details. The meeting point is under the entrance arch of Rocca Albani.
During the Days, free access to the Community Memory Museum is available in the morning. It houses a collection of weapons and memorabilia related to the World Wars and the 20th century. A journey that intertwines the medieval history of the fortress with the more recent memory of the territory and its people.
As part of the National Days of Castles, the opening of the Rocca Viscontea is a precious opportunity to rediscover the historical and architectural heritage of Romano di Lombardia. A journey into the medieval Bergamo, discovering a fortress that has spanned the centuries and still dominates the historic center of the town.
In 2026, the Rocca Viscontea in Romano di Lombardia participates in the National Days of Castles, Palaces and Medieval Villages, scheduled in Lombardy from May 14 to 24. The fortress opens its doors with a program of guided tours led by experts.
