The carpet of fabric and threads that colors Fermo Cathedral for Corpus Domini
The Crocheted Flower Festival... (and not only)! is one of the most original and poetic initiatives in Fermo's calendar. Unlike classic flower carpets, where the carpet is made of fresh petals and flowers, here every meter of the path is created from 60x60 cm square tiles made with crochet, knitting, patchwork, and other textile techniques. The result is a colorful, soft, and durable carpet that winds along the avenue leading to Fermo Cathedral, in the heart of the historic center of the provincial capital city in the Marche region.
The event takes place on the occasion of the Solemnity of Corpus Domini (Body and Blood of Christ) and stems from the meeting between the idea and passion for crochet of two parishioners from the Parish of San Domenico in Fermo and the availability of the Cathedral's rector, Don Michele Rogante. From that initial core, a project has grown that combines spirituality and manual skill: the theme of the tiles is mainly eucharistic, but it can extend to religious and floral subjects, leaving room for the imagination of those who create them.
The strength of the initiative lies in its participatory and cumulative dimension: each edition adds new tiles to those from previous years, progressively lengthening the carpet. The creations come from all over Italy, a sign of word-of-mouth that has crossed city borders and involved individuals, associations, and nursing homes from various regions. It is a choral work, where each tile tells the dedication of the person who stitched it.
For those visiting the Marche in spring, the Fermo Crocheted Flower Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover a young but already deeply felt tradition, where popular devotion and handmade art intertwine along the village streets.
The fifth edition of the Crocheted Flower Festival... (and not only)! takes place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, on the occasion of the Solemnity of Corpus Domini. The long handmade carpet can be visited from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM continuously, along the green areas of the avenue leading to Fermo Cathedral.
The 2026 edition reaches record dimensions: over 410 tiles for a total length of approximately 246 meters, compared to the starting length of about 217 meters. The creations came from numerous Italian realities, including the OIC Onlus Foundation Nursing Home in Padua, the La Torre social center in Ponzano, the Reteviva Santa Croce Association in Macerata, as well as individual participants from Cosenza, Como, Sorrento, Benevento, Modena, and Rome. In case of bad weather, the carpet is set up inside the Cathedral.
