Nardò's summer cultural festival featuring literature, poetry, theatre, and music
The Crocevia per lo Ionio Festival is the cultural highlight that enlivens Nardò, an elegant Baroque town in the province of Lecce, every summer. Established in 2020 by the Sogni di Carta Association, in collaboration with the Nardò Presidio del Libro and Libreria Fiore, the event has become one of the most anticipated literary gatherings in southern Puglia, attracting nationally renowned writers, philosophers, journalists, and musicians.
The festival's name reflects its mission: to make Nardò a crossroads (crocevia) of words, stories, and visions overlooking the Ionian Sea. For three evenings in late August, the central Piazza Cesare Battisti transforms into an open-air salon featuring book presentations, theatrical readings, philosophical dialogues, poetry, and live music. The audience, gathered under the Salento stars, engages directly with authors in a spirit of open debate, perfectly captured by the recent editions' slogan: «Culture belongs to everyone… no one excluded».
Over the years, the festival has hosted influential cultural figures, including journalist Domenico Iannacone, poet Franco Arminio, philosopher Massimo Donà, and singer-songwriter Giulio Casale, alongside recent guests such as Umberto Galimberti, Matteo Bussola, Sergio Rizzo, and Mario Perrotta. The programme blends various artistic languages:
The main August festival is preceded by the Aspettando Crocevia per lo Ionio (Waiting for Crocevia per lo Ionio) series, featuring spring and summer events held in evocative city landmarks like the Chiostro dei Carmelitani. The festival is part of the Onde di Cultura. Estate culturale neretina (Waves of Culture. Nardò Summer) programme promoted by the Municipality of Nardò, which highlights the historic centre throughout the summer season.
Attending the festival is the perfect opportunity to discover Nardò, with its spectacular Baroque historic centre, the Cathedral, the famous Piazza Salandra, and the nearby Ionian coast of Santa Maria al Bagno and Santa Caterina. This blend of culture and sea makes the Crocevia per lo Ionio a defining event for the entire Salento region and Puglia.
The seventh edition of the Crocevia per lo Ionio Festival returns to Nardò (province of Lecce) from August 26th to 28th, 2026, with main events in Piazza Cesare Battisti. The festival is part of the Onde di Cultura. Estate culturale neretina programme promoted by the Municipality of Nardò and organised by the Sogni di Carta Association with the local Presidio del Libro.
The festival is preceded by the Aspettando Crocevia per lo Ionio meetings, which in the spring-summer of 2026 brought guests such as writer and illustrator Matteo Bussola and journalist Sergio Rizzo to the city, with events also hosted in the Chiostro dei Carmelitani.
The programme may be enriched with further guests announced by the organisers.
Nardò can be reached by car via the Lecce-Gallipoli expressway; the Nardò train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est with connections from Lecce. The nearest airports are Brindisi-Papola Casale and Bari-Palese.
Evening events are primarily held in Piazza Cesare Battisti, in the historic centre. The Aspettando Crocevia per lo Ionio events may take place in other city locations, such as the Chiostro dei Carmelitani.
Events in the square are generally free of charge. We recommend checking the updated programme on the festival's social media channels.
