Antiques, vintage, and 20th-century art in the medieval village of Buonconvento
The Cose del Passato Regional Antique Fair is one of the most anticipated events of the Sienese spring. It is held annually in the Municipality of Buonconvento, a small walled jewel in the Val d'Arbia, in the province of Siena (Tuscany), and always chooses the Easter weekend to bring the medieval village to life with a widespread antique market.
For four days, the alleys enclosed by 14th-century walls, the squares, and especially the old vacant shops and workshops are revitalized, becoming exhibition spaces. This is the hallmark of the event, which breathes new life into the town's venues, transforming them into a journey through antique furniture, vintage objects, mid-century design, and early 20th-century art.
Exhibitors offer a selection designed for all tastes and budgets: from period furniture to small collectibles, from ceramics to prints, and even unique pieces of 20th-century art. More than just an exhibition, "Cose del Passato" is an invitation to rediscover the pleasure of searching for and finding hidden treasures.
In recent years, the fair has linked its identity to the themes of reuse and the circular economy: giving new life to antique furniture and objects also becomes a gesture of sustainability. Reinforcing this message is the Treno Natura, the historic steam train that travels along the picturesque Crete Senesi railway line to reach Buonconvento, allowing visitors to arrive at the fair via a slow, scenic, and low-impact journey.
The fair is not just a market. During the event, the museums of Buonconventoโthe Museum of Sacred Art of the Val d'Arbia, the Museum of Sienese Sharecropping, and the halls of the Town Hallโremain open with continuous hours and host temporary exhibitions of painting, inlay work, and photography, as well as music and storytelling sessions.
Taking place during Holy Week, the fair coexists with the village's religious traditions, starting with the evocative Good Friday Procession, a re-enactment that dates back to 1726 in Buonconvento. Antiques, art, faith, and the joy of slow travel: this is the formula that fills the town's streets with curious visitors, collectors, and families every Easter.
The 42nd edition of "Cose del Passato" confirmed the formula that made the event famous: the medieval village of Buonconvento transformed into a widespread antique market, with period items, mid-century design, and 20th-century works exhibited in historic workshops. The 2026 edition highlighted the themes of reuse and sustainable mobility, with the return of the Treno Natura on Easter Monday.
By car: Buonconvento is located along the SR2 Cassia road, about 30 km south of Siena, towards Montalcino and the Val d'Orcia.
By train: The village is served by the Buonconvento station on the SienaโGrosseto line. During the fair, the Treno Natura is also active, a historic steam train departing from Siena, with bookings managed by the Visione del Mondo agency.
Admission to the fair is free. Visits to the museums and the Treno Natura may require a separate ticket.
The event takes place every year during the Easter weekend, from Good Friday to Easter Monday.
