About Corri a Mascalucia

Corri a Mascalucia is a road running event that debuted in March 2026 in the historic center of Mascalucia, in the province of Catania, at the foot of Mount Etna. The major innovation is the "Survivor Series" format: a knockout tournament held on a 1,000-meter city circuit, featuring heats, repechages, semifinals, and a twelve-athlete final. Organized by ASD Altis Athletics and held along Via Etnea, Via Calvario, and Via Scalilla, it is a spectacular race designed for spectators, the likes of which has never been seen before in Sicily.

Corri a Mascalucia, a spectacular race at the foot of Mount Etna

Corri a Mascalucia is a road running event held in the heart of the Municipality of Mascalucia, a town in the Catania hinterland located on the southeastern slopes of Mount Etna. Promoted by the municipal administration and organized by ASD Altis Athletics, the race debuted in 2026, bringing a completely new competitive format to Sicily, capable of transforming a classic city run into a true sporting spectacle followed by crowds along the town's streets.

The Survivor Series format

The hallmark of Corri a Mascalucia is the "Survivor Series" format, a knockout tournament run on a short 1,000-meter city circuit. The formula includes two qualifying heats, a repechage session for those who do not qualify directly, semifinals, and finally a grand final featuring the twelve fastest athletes. Competitions are held in both men's and women's categories, while youth categories (Esordienti and Cadetti) run using the traditional single-heat formula. The tight alternation of heats, sprints, and repechages makes the day gripping from start to finish.

The course in the center of Mascalucia

The circuit winds through the historic center along Via Etnea (in the stretch between Piazza Umberto and Via Calvario), Via Calvario, and Via Scalilla, with the start and finish line in the area of the Church of San Vito. To allow the race to take place, the Municipality arranges for the closure of the affected streets to traffic, with alternative routes provided for those coming from the north and south, ensuring safety for competitors and visibility for the public gathered along the track.

A recognized race open to all

The event is an official race included in the regional calendar, recognized by FIDAL and CSAIn. Beyond the technical challenge of the knockout format, it rewards the top finishers in each category and offers the community a sporting celebration in the heart of an Etna-area town. Corri a Mascalucia was created with the intention of being held annually, establishing itself as a permanent fixture in Sicilian road running.
