Floral carpets and Eucharistic procession in the heart of the Iblei Mountains
In the mountain village of Monterosso Almo, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy nestled within the Iblei Mountains, in the heart of the Ragusa province, the solemnity of Corpus Domini is one of the most cherished events of the year. The tradition of the infiorata (flower festival) has long been established here, becoming a true exhibition of floral "paintings" that cover the streets of the historic center.
In the days leading up to the feast, Monterosso families work with great meticulousness to compose carpets made almost entirely of flowers of all kinds, petals, and leaves, filling the streets of the characteristic Iblei village with color and scent. Along the procession route, decorated altars are set up, fine blankets are draped from balconies, and, according to local custom, molded bread is displayed as a sign of ancient popular devotion.
The highlight is the Eucharistic procession that, at dusk, traverses the historic center. The pageant winds its way from the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta along the village streets to the Church of San Giovanni Battista, passing through the most picturesque squares and alleys. The grand floral display in Piazza Sant'Antonio is traditionally one of the most scenic points of the entire route.
Monterosso Almo, a small town of about three thousand inhabitants, preserves an urban fabric made of alleys, courtyards, stairways, and ancient arched passages leading to the oldest district, the Matrice. The Mother Church, a national monument rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, and the Church of San Giovanni Battista with its imposing facade, serve as a natural scenic backdrop for this celebration of faith and community. The Corpus Domini Flower Festivals are the ideal opportunity to discover the authenticity of inland Sicily, amidst spirituality, ephemeral art, and popular warmth.
The event is held on the Sunday of the Corpus Domini solemnity in June, with the Eucharistic celebration in the late afternoon and the evening procession through the flower-lined streets of the village.
On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Monterosso Almo celebrated the solemnity of Corpus Domini with the traditional flower festivals. At 7:30 PM, the solemn Eucharistic celebration was held at the Mother Church, presided over by the archpriest Don Innocenzo Mascali. At 8:30 PM, the Eucharistic procession began along the route from the Mother Church, Via Roma, Via Pia, and Piazza Sant'Antonio, continuing through the historic center to the Church of San Giovanni Battista.
The village streets were covered with floral carpets meticulously crafted by Monterosso families, with a giant floral display set up in Piazza Sant'Antonio. Participation was particularly heartfelt, with decorated altars and fine blankets displayed from balconies along the procession route.
Monterosso Almo is located in the Iblei Mountains, in the province of Ragusa (Sicily). By car, it can be reached from Ragusa and Vizzini along the internal provincial roads; the nearest airport is Comiso (Ragusa), followed by Catania-Fontanarossa.
Admission to the flower festivals and the procession is free. We recommend arriving in the afternoon to admire the floral carpets before the procession passes. Wear comfortable shoes for the stairways and alleys of the historic center.
