Vignanello's floral carpet for the solemnity of Corpus Domini
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival in Vignanello is one of the most heartfelt religious celebrations in the Viterbo Tuscia region. Its roots date back to the 19th century, as evidenced by period documents and photographs, and its execution has been interrupted only during the two world wars. Every year, the Pro Loco of Vignanello, in collaboration with the municipal administration, carries forward and strives to improve the event with the declared goal of reviving and recovering local folk traditions. In 2025, the event was presented as the eighth edition of the current format, a sign of a recent renumbering that does not erase over a century of history.
The heart of the event is the night between the Saturday and Sunday of Corpus Domini. Preparation work begins in the late afternoon on Saturday, around 7 PM, and continues non-stop until dawn: the flower artists lay a carpet on the pavement made exclusively of fresh flowers and plant materials, decorated with geometric modules, floral motifs, and sacred images. The route starts from the Arco del Vignola and continues uninterrupted to Piazza della Repubblica, for a total length of about 350 meters, divided into about twenty large rectangular carpets. The best time to admire the work is early Sunday morning, before the carpets have been walked upon.
On Sunday morning, after the solemn mass celebrated in the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria della Presentazione, the Corpus Domini procession crosses the entire flower-covered carpet and reaches the Convent of the Passionist Sisters, located just after Porta del Molesino. It is the culminating moment of the feast: the passage of the Blessed Sacrament over the flower carpet gives meaning to an entire night of collective work, following a rite that is repeated from generation to generation.
The Flower Festival is a choral work: the Vignanello community participates organized by age groups, under the direction of the Pro Loco and the Vignanello Flower Artists Association. Schools also play an important role thanks to the "Flower Festival," a weekend between April and May where about 150 local students create themed floral carpets as an educational and artistic project that prepares the new generations of flower artists.
Vignanello is a village in the province of Viterbo, in northern Lazio, in the heart of the Tuscia region. The Municipality of Vignanello sponsors the event, which is part of the rich calendar of Corpus Domini celebrations in the villages of the Viterbo area, featuring solemn processions and flower festivals. For those visiting the Lazio Region at the beginning of summer, the Vignanello Flower Festival is an authentic opportunity to discover a historic village and a living folk tradition, far from the most beaten tourist circuits.
The tradition of the Vignanello Flower Festival has known no interruptions since the post-war period, and the 2025 edition took place regularly on June 21 and 22. For 2026, however, no official communications from the Pro Loco Vignanello or the Municipality have been found to confirm the event: in 2026, the solemnity of Corpus Domini fell on Sunday, June 7, the date on which several villages in the Tuscia celebrated their own flower festivals.
The structure of the event is, however, well-established: setup of the floral carpet on Saturday night, from the Arco del Vignola to Piazza della Repubblica, and a solemn procession on Sunday morning after mass in the Collegiate Church, up to the Convent of the Passionist Sisters. For confirmation on the 2026 edition and future editions, it is advisable to contact the Pro Loco of Vignanello (tel. +39 0761 754965) or consult its official channels.
The Flower Festival takes place in the historic center of Vignanello (VT), along the route from the Arco del Vignola to Piazza della Repubblica. The date is movable and follows the liturgical calendar of the solemnity of Corpus Domini, between the end of May and the end of June: the setup occupies Saturday night, and the procession is held on Sunday morning after the 10 AM mass in the Collegiate Church.
By car: A1 motorway, exit at Orte, then follow signs for Vallerano and Vignanello; from Viterbo, you can reach the village along the provincial roads of the Tuscia in about half an hour.
The event is free to attend. Information: Pro Loco Vignanello, Via della Stazione 22 — tel. +39 0761 754965.
