The night that turns the village into an open-air art gallery
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival in Torricella Sicura, a small town in the Teramo province of Abruzzo, is much more than a religious decoration: it is an artistic and communal event that, every year on the weekend of Corpus Domini, turns the village's main street into an open-air art gallery. Over 150 meters of road come to life with more than 500 square meters of paintings, composed piece by piece during an all-night vigil that involves the entire town.
The great uniqueness of this festival is that it does not use flower petals, but dust-free white fir wood shavings colored with water-based tempera. This choice is not accidental: Torricella Sicura is among the towns closest to the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, and the Truciolinarte association wanted a sustainable material that respects the local environment. The designs are conceived every year starting in September, hand-drawn, and then carefully colored, frame by frame.
The heart of the event is popular participation: about 350 volunteers—families, young people, the elderly, and local associations—work side by side throughout the night to complete the work by Sunday dawn. The festival is organized by the Associazione Infiorate Artistiche Truciolinarte in collaboration with the San Paolo Parish, the Pro Loco of Torricella and Santo Stefano, and under the patronage of the Municipality and the BIM Consortium of Teramo.
The night of the festival is marked by moments of celebration and reflection: the traditional candlelight concert by Maestro Franco Di Donatantonio, with hundreds of candles lit along the path, and the piano bar by Roberta Pomanti accompany the hours of work. In recent years, the STREET project has been added, featuring large murals dedicated to local legends, such as that of the Colle Ciliegio Castle, signed by artist Ivan Dimitri Pilogallo. On Sunday morning, from the first light of dawn, the completed paintings are admired by visitors; in the afternoon, there are games for children, Holy Mass, and the solemn Corpus Domini procession that travels over the art carpet.
Now in its twentieth edition, the Torricella Sicura Flower Festival has established itself as one of the most evocative Corpus Domini appointments in Abruzzo, capable of uniting faith, popular tradition, ephemeral art, and a sense of community. An event that, as the association likes to repeat, was born to "awaken and cherish" the artistic and cultural sentiment of the Teramo village.
The twentieth edition of the Flower Festival, inspired by the theme "The Eucharist: from wood shavings to the Word", represented the central moments of the liturgical celebration as a spiritual journey into the heart of faith. As per tradition, the Truciolinarte association used dust-free white fir wood shavings and water-based tempera, in respect of the nearby Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
The Saturday program included the gathering of volunteers in the afternoon, Mass for the participants, the distribution of sketches, and the start of the festival in the evening, accompanied by the piano bar of Roberta Pomanti and the evocative candlelight concert by Maestro Franco Di Donatantonio, with over 700 candles lit. As part of the third year of the STREET project, artist Ivan Dimitri Pilogallo created a mural of about 70 square meters dedicated to the legend of the Colle Ciliegio Castle. On Sunday, at dawn, the village appeared as an open-air art gallery, with games for children, Holy Mass, and the solemn Corpus Domini procession.
Torricella Sicura is located about 6 km from Teramo, in the hinterland towards the Monti della Laga. By car, it is easily reached from Teramo via the provincial roads; the most convenient motorway exit is Teramo on the A24 (Rome-Teramo). Bus services are available from Teramo to the village.
The festival takes place on the Corpus Domini weekend, between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The central street of the village becomes pedestrianized for the occasion.
The event is free and outdoors. The most evocative moment is at dawn on Sunday, when the paintings are completed.
