Floral carpets and Eucharistic Procession in the historic center of Velletri
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival of San Salvatore is one of the most cherished moments in the religious calendar of Velletri, in the Lazio region. On the occasion of Corpus Domini in early June, the ancient stones of the historic center are transformed into an open-air art gallery: petals, leaves, and natural materials are patiently arranged into stunning floral carpets—ephemeral masterpieces destined to last only a few hours before returning to nature. It is an authentic act of devotion and belonging that weaves together artistic expression, spirituality, and community identity.
What makes the Velletri event unique is its widespread nature: the floral displays are not concentrated in a single spot but dot the procession route along Via Carlo Rosselli, Via Cannetoli, and Piazza San Clemente, where the city cathedral stands. The path starts at Piazza San Salvatore and winds through the ancient heart of the city, touching Vicolo delle Fratte, Via Alfonso Alfonsi, Piazza Cairoli, Corso della Repubblica, Piazza Mazzini, and Via Fabio Filzi. Each carpet is a small collective work of art, the result of days of preparation and hours of meticulous work on the cobblestones.
The highlight of the day is the Eucharistic Procession following the Holy Mass celebrated in Piazza San Salvatore. Preceded by the recitation of the Holy Rosary, the celebration is presided over by the Bishop of the Suburbicarian Diocese of Velletri-Segni and concludes with the Eucharistic blessing at the Cathedral of San Clemente. The historic city brotherhoods march along the route, accompanied by the Sbandieratori e Musici Città di Velletri, in a pageant that combines liturgical solemnity with the colors of popular tradition.
The flower festival is, above all, a collective effort: faithful, brotherhoods, local associations, and volunteers of all ages work side by side to design and fill the sketches, passing down to younger generations an ancient knowledge made of hands, flowers, and patience. The 2026 edition held special significance, as it was dedicated to the memory of Don Paolo Picca, the beloved priest who for years guarded and cherished this tradition.
Velletri, a municipality within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, is one of the capitals of the Castelli Romani flower festivals, a territory in Lazio where the art of floral carpets for Corpus Domini has been rooted for centuries, as evidenced by the famous nearby town of Genzano. Visiting the San Salvatore Flower Festival means discovering a city rich in history, vineyards, and flavors, serving as the southern gateway to the Alban Hills. Admission is free, and the day is perfect for a stroll through the squares and churches of the historic center, in a festive atmosphere perfumed with petals and the onset of summer.
The 2026 edition of the Corpus Domini Flower Festival of San Salvatore took place on Sunday, June 7, and held special significance: the floral carpets were a sincere tribute to the late Don Paolo Picca, the parish priest who for years guarded and supported this tradition. Coordination was entrusted to Monsignor Roberto Mariani and his parish collaborators, together with the historic brotherhoods and local associations.
The day began in the afternoon with the recitation of the Holy Rosary in Piazza San Salvatore, followed at 6:00 PM by the Solemn Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Bishop Stefano Russo. Immediately after, the Eucharistic Procession crossed the historic center, walking over the petal paintings set up in Via Carlo Rosselli, Via Cannetoli, and Piazza San Clemente, concluding with the blessing at the cathedral. The Sbandieratori e Musici Città di Velletri also marched along the route, in a celebration of faith, ephemeral art, and community.
Velletri can be reached by train from Rome Termini via the regional FL4 Rome-Velletri line (approx. 1 hour); the historic center is a few minutes' walk from the station. By car: Take the Via Appia Nuova (SS7) or the Valmontone exit from the A1 motorway, then follow signs for Velletri.
The event is free and takes place outdoors throughout the streets of the historic center, with no reservation required.
The floral carpets are best admired in the afternoon before the procession passes: after the blessing, the ephemeral artwork is cleared away. For information: Chiesa del SS. Salvatore, tel. +39 06 9630846.
