The Sannio village carpeted in floral art for the solemn procession
On the day of Corpus Domini, Cusano Mutri, a town in the Province of Benevento, Campania, completely changes its appearance. The stone-paved streets of the historic center, the squares, church courtyards, and even the church aisles are covered in large floral mosaics, composed by hand, petal by petal. This is the Corpus Domini Flower Festival, one of the most iconic events in the Sannio area, drawing visitors from across Campania and beyond every year.
The people of Cusano have decorated the procession route with floral carpets since time immemorial: spontaneous gestures by small neighborhood groups adorning their own stretch of road. Since 1995, the Pro Loco Cusanese has given the event a structured form, defining rules, routes, and materials while preserving its spiritual essence: there is no competition, no prizes, and no jury. The stated goal remains to unite faith, the cultural prestige of the village, and community cohesion. In 2026, the 32nd edition was celebrated.
The work begins long before the festival with the gathering of wildflowers from the meadows and woods surrounding the villageโan activity involving entire families, from the young to the elderly. The compositions are based on sketches prepared in the preceding months and are then filled with entirely natural materials:
According to the InfiorItalia national circuit, of which Cusano Mutri is a member, about 500 people participate in the creation each year, ranging from seven to over seventy years old: those who draw, those who gather, those who separate petals by color, and those who stay on their knees all night to compose. The technique is the horizontal mixed-media style, the same as the great Italian flower festivals.
The event spans two days. On Saturday evening, the village comes alive: starting at 8:00 PM, the composition of the mosaics begins along the streets of the historic center, accompanied by live music and food stalls, allowing visitors to stroll through the alleys and watch the artists at work until late at night. On Sunday, the day of Corpus Domini, the carpets reach their peak splendor in the daylight, before the culminating moment: the Holy Mass and the solemn Eucharistic procession in the late afternoon, which traverses and consumes the floral mosaics under the feet of the faithful. This is the profound meaning of the flower festival: a work of art built to be gifted and erased in a few hours.
Each edition features subjects chosen by the working groups: the parish and confraternities curate the sacred mosaics inside the churches (from the Salvator Mundi to the Sacred Thorn), while associations, the Youth Forum, sports clubs, students from the Art High School, and simple groups of friends create secular mosaics in the squares, often on current themes: peace, the environment, violence against women, the anniversaries of the Republic, and rebirth after a tragedy that has touched the territory. Alongside the carpets, one can find brass bands, roving musicians, reading corners, and creative workshops for the little ones.
At 475 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Matese mountains, Cusano Mutri is a stone village made of arches, stairways, and narrow alleys overlooking the Telesina Valley. The town is also known for its autumnal Mushroom Festival, but it is through the Flower Festival that it reveals its most intimate and choral side. The churches hosting the festival are the Saints Apostles Peter and Paul, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Mary of Grace, all within a few minutes' walk of each other.
The Cusano Mutri Flower Festival is not an event built for tourism: it is a village feast that welcomes those who arrive. Those who truly want to understand its spirit should head up to the village on Saturday evening, when the streets are illuminated and the designs take shape under the hands of the volunteers, and return on Sunday to see them complete before they vanish with the procession. Admission is free on both days.
For the 2026 edition, the village of Cusano Mutri hosted large floral mosaics along the streets, in the squares, and in the most characteristic places of the historic center, as well as inside the churches. The culminating moment was the Corpus Domini procession on Sunday, June 7, presided over by the bishop of the diocese of Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant'Agata de' Goti, which crossed the petal carpets accompanied by the village brass band.
In Piazza Orticelli, several secular compositions were concentrated, including a Starry Night inspired by Van Gogh created with students from the Art High School, a mosaic dedicated to the 80 years of the Italian Republic curated by the Youth Forum, one created by the local boxing sports club on the theme of peace, and a tribute titled For Antonia: Rebirth. In Piazza Roma, the mosaic This is not our war appeared, while the churches of Saint John the Baptist, Saint Mary of Grace, and the Saints Apostles Peter and Paul hosted sacred subjects curated by parish groups.
The organization was handled by the Pro Loco Cusanese with the Municipality of Cusano Mutri, the Campania Region, UNPLI, Comunitร in Cammino, and the InfiorItalia circuit, with the support of the municipal Civil Protection, the Local Police, the confraternities, and numerous local associations.
By car: from the A1 motorway, take the Caianello exit, then the SS372 Telesina towards Benevento and exit for Cusano Mutri; from Naples about 1h45, from Benevento about 45 minutes, from Caserta about 1h15. The access roads to the village are narrow: it is advisable to leave the car in the parking lots at the entrance to the village and continue on foot.
By train: Telese Terme-Cerreto station (Caserta-Benevento line), about 20 km away, then bus or taxi.
Free admission, both for visiting the floral mosaics and for the procession. No reservation is required. The food stalls on Saturday evening are for-pay with typical village festival prices.
