An unbroken carpet of flowers in the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia region
The Corchiano Flower Festival is one of the most evocative events in this small town in the province of Viterbo, in the heart of the Lazio Tuscia. Unlike many Italian flower festivals composed of a series of distinct panels with different subjects, the Corchiano event stands out for a radical choice: a single, unbroken floral carpet that winds seamlessly along the streets of the historic center, extending into the newer areas for a route of nearly two kilometers. It is a ribbon of petals that some have compared to a botanical Trajan's Column unrolled on the town's cobblestones.
The festival is born from and exists for the Marian procession. The statue of the Madonna is carried in a procession by the porters of the local brotherhood along the floral path, which culminates in front of the altar set up on Via Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto. The flower carpet is therefore not merely a decoration, but an act of devotion: the very path of the sacred through the town, made soft and fragrant by the petals. It is this intertwining of popular faith and ephemeral art that gives the event its intimate yet festive atmosphere.
The day follows a well-established ritual. In the morning, after a short procession, teams of volunteers begin to compose the festival: flowers and colorful petals are patiently arranged on the cobblestones according to designs prepared in advance. Work continues until the afternoon, when the carpet is finally complete and ready to welcome the passage of the Virgin. Families, residents, and tourists move around the work, walking through the historic center with the wonder that only art destined to last a few hours can evoke.
Nestled between the gorges and woods of the Faliscan territory, the Municipality of Corchiano preserves a stone historic center that, during the days of the festival, becomes the natural stage for this tradition. We are in the Viterbo Tuscia, a land of Faliscan and Etruscan origins, where religious festivals still mark the community calendar today. The festival is organized by the Pro Loco Corchiano Association, which coordinates the work of volunteers every year and keeps a deeply felt local custom alive.
In 2026, the Corchiano Flower Festival returned to color the historic center from May 29th to 31st, confirming the appointment on the last Sunday of the month. Volunteers from the Pro Loco Corchiano Association created the customary unbroken floral carpet, which wound along the town streets to the altar on Via Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, where the Marian procession culminated. A weekend of collective work, devotion, and village celebration in the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia.
