The patronal feast of Torricella Sicura: faith, neighborhood competitions, and eco-friendly decorations
The Conversion of Saint Paul is the patronal feast of Torricella Sicura, a village in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, set between the Teramo hills and the slopes of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Every year, on January 25th, the entire community gathers around the parish church of Saint Paul the Apostle and the central Piazza Mario Capuani to honor the town's patron saint with religious celebrations and shared festivities.
The most distinctive and beloved aspect of the event is the active participation of the town's neighborhoods (rioni). Traditionally five, named after the churches in their respective areas, the Monacizzo neighborhood has also joined in recent years. This popular involvement has been a decisive factor in revitalizing the festival, especially regarding the street decorations.
In the weeks leading up to the event, residents in each neighborhood prepare ornaments and decorations using recycled and eco-friendly materials, sparking a genuine competition for the most original display. The town center is transformed into a colorful, creative path where the imagination of the residents meets a message of environmental awareness and the value of reuse.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the parish church of Saint Paul the Apostle, located in the main square. Rebuilt in the late 18th century and completed in 1806 to replace the ancient parish church, it features a style reminiscent of European Baroqueโa rare presence in Abruzzo, though found in several churches in the Teramo area. Around this building, the community of Torricella Sicura renews its bond with its patron saint every year.
The festival takes place throughout the day, roughly from 8:30 AM to 11:00 PM, with Piazza Mario Capuani as the main hub. The event is open to everyone and is free of charge: a perfect opportunity to discover the hospitality of a small Abruzzese town and the vitality of its traditions.
