The Passion of Christ reinterpreted by contemporary art in the Pollino village
In Castronuovo di Sant'Andrea, a village in the province of Potenza within the Pollino National Park, the Contemporary Via Crucis transforms the devotion of Good Friday into an artistic experience. Each year, a contemporary artist is invited to reinterpret the fourteen stations of the Passion, which are set up along the streets of the historic center and walked in procession.
The initiative stems from Castronuovo's cultural vocation, home to the MIG, the International Graphics Museum, and fits into a continuous dialogue between contemporary art and spirituality. Over the years, renowned painters and sculptors have taken part, each with their own visual interpretation of the journey to Calvary.
The procession among the artist-designed stations, accompanied by the community, creates an atmosphere of intense contemplation. The works, displayed outdoors and illuminated, guide the faithful and visitors in a meditation that is both religious and aesthetic, within the evocative setting of the Lucanian village.
Organized by the Polo Museale together with the parish and the Municipality of Castronuovo di Sant'Andrea, the Contemporary Via Crucis is accompanied by exhibitions at the MIG and confirms the role of this small village as a widespread capital of art in the heart of southern Basilicata.
The 2026 edition of the Contemporary Via Crucis is scheduled for Friday, April 3rd, with two celebrations: at 5:30 PM and 11:00 PM. The fourteen stations of the Passion are the work of the artist Alessandra Bonoli (Faenza, 1956), who interprets the event through a symbolic language: a red line for Christ's sacrifice and suffering, yellow crosses as a light of salvation, and blue representing Mary. The event is organized by the Polo Museale, the parish, the Pro Loco, and the Municipality.
The fourteen artist-designed stations by Alessandra Bonoli, the evocative 11:00 PM night repeat, and the exhibitions dedicated to Giacomo Manzù at the MIG.
