About CloseUP Festival

CloseUP is the international festival of contemporary circus, dance, and video that transforms the historic center of Crema into an open-air stage every September. Under the artistic direction of Mara Serina, European artists present performances that engage with the architectural heritage of the Crema region, in the province of Cremona. It's a festival that eschews traditional acts with animals, focusing instead on research, quality, and the intersection of body arts and visual imagery.

When the City Becomes a Stage

CloseUP is the international festival of contemporary circus, dance, and video that has animated the historic center of Crema, in the province of Cremona, for several editions. For a few days in September, the city's squares, courtyards, cloisters, and hidden corners transform into stage spaces where the beauty of Crema's architectural heritage provides a backdrop for performances by Italian and European companies.

A Rigorous Artistic Proposal

The artistic direction is entrusted to Mara Serina, who has curated a festival focused on contemporary circus and authorial dance, excluding traditional acts with animals and prioritizing the research and talent of emerging and established European artists. Video is incorporated into the programming as a distinct language, in dialogue with movement and the locations.

A Tribute to Pina Bausch

Among the most beloved events is the Nelken Line, a flash mob in tribute to the great choreographer Pina Bausch: a silent procession of participants that traverses the historic center, repeating four essential gestures inspired by the seasons and nature. This initiative, supported by the Pina Bausch Foundation, is open to everyone, with no need to be a professional dancer, following a few collective rehearsals.

A Festival for Crema

Promoted by iagostudio in collaboration with the Municipality of Crema and local cultural organizations, CloseUP has become a landmark event for lovers of contemporary performing arts in Lombardy, bringing together a curious audience and international artistic languages in the heart of the Crema region.

CloseUP Festival — edition 2026

The eighth edition of CloseUP animates the historic center of Crema from September 11 to 13, 2026, with international performances of contemporary circus, dance, and video. The highlight of the event is the Nelken Line, a tribute to Pina Bausch, scheduled for Saturday, September 12 at 6:00 PM in the historic center.

The VIII edition of CloseUP brings three days of contemporary circus, dance, and video to the historic sites of Crema. Under the artistic direction of Mara Serina, the festival brings together European companies and artists in the city's squares, courtyards, and cloisters. The signature event is the Nelken Line, a flash mob in tribute to Pina Bausch, produced with the support of the Pina Bausch Foundation, open to all and preceded by collective rehearsals in the preceding months.
