Contemporary circus, dance and video in the historic heart of Crema
CloseUP is the international festival of contemporary circus, dance and video that for several editions has enlivened the historic centre of Crema, in the province of Cremona. For a few days in September, squares, courtyards, cloisters, and hidden corners of the city transform into scenic spaces where the beauty of Crema's architectural heritage serves as a backdrop for performances by Italian and European companies.
The artistic direction is entrusted to Mara Serina, who has curated a festival focused on contemporary circus and authorial dance, excluding traditional acts with animals and favouring the research and talent of emerging and established European artists. Video is included in the programming as a language in its own right, in dialogue with movement and with the locations.
Among the most beloved events is the Nelken Line, a flash mob in tribute to the great choreographer Pina Bausch: a silent procession of participants crossing the historic centre, repeating four essential gestures inspired by the seasons and nature. The initiative, supported by the Pina Bausch Foundation, is open to everyone, no professional dancer experience required, after a few group rehearsals.
Promoted by iagostudio in collaboration with the Municipality of Crema and local cultural organisations, CloseUP is now a key event for lovers of contemporary performing arts in Lombardy, capable of bringing together a curious audience and international artistic languages in the heart of the city of Crema.
The VIII edition of CloseUP brings three days of contemporary circus, dance, and video to the historic venues of Crema. Under the artistic direction of Mara Serina, the festival brings together European companies and artists in the city's squares, courtyards, and cloisters. The signature event is the Nelken Line, the flash mob tribute to Pina Bausch, realised with the support of the Pina Bausch Foundation, open to all and preceded by group rehearsals in the preceding months.
The full programme of contemporary circus, dance, and video performances will be announced on the festival's official website and social media channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
