The international contemporary dance festival of the Marche region
Civitanova Danza is one of the longest-running and most prestigious contemporary dance festivals in Italy. Founded in 1994, every summer it transforms Civitanova Marche, a city on the Adriatic coast in the Province of Macerata, in the Marche region, into a benchmark for Italian and international dance. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Civitanova Marche, the Azienda dei Teatri di Civitanova, and AMAT (Associazione Marchigiana Attività Teatrali), with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Marche Region.
The festival is deeply linked to the figure of Enrico Cecchetti (1850-1928), a legendary dancer and teacher born in Civitanova Marche, considered one of the fathers of modern academic technique and trainer of entire generations of dancers at the Ballets Russes. Civitanova has dedicated a theatre to him and keeps his memory alive through a festival that combines choreographic tradition and contemporary research.
The strength of Civitanova Danza lies in its widespread nature: the performances animate various city spaces, from the main Teatro Rossini to the Teatro Cecchetti, from the Teatro Annibal Caro in the evocative Civitanova Alta to the Church of San Francesco and the city squares. The heart of the program is the usual Festival nel Festival event, a dance marathon that, in a single evening, takes the audience moving between multiple venues to witness creations by different companies and artists.
The program alternates established names on the international scene with young emerging choreographers, featuring numerous national premieres and creative residency projects. Over the years, Civitanova has hosted some of the world's most famous companies, including the renowned Momix, as well as prominent Italian groups such as the Balletto di Roma and the Compagnia Zappalà Danza. Part of the program also takes place beyond the municipal borders, with performances in scenic venues such as the Arena di Villa Vitali in Fermo.
With its summer atmosphere, the quality of its programming, and its connection to the history of academic dance, Civitanova Danza is an unmissable event for enthusiasts and an opportunity to discover a vibrant city on the Marche coast, between sea, culture, and tradition.
The 33rd edition of the festival, promoted by the Municipality of Civitanova Marche, the Azienda dei Teatri di Civitanova, and AMAT with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Marche Region, opens on July 3 at the Teatro Rossini with Näss (Le Phare / Les Gens) by Franco-Algerian choreographer Fouad Boussouf, in its national premiere. The program continues until August 2, when the Arena di Villa Vitali in Fermo hosts the Bach Dance Concert with pianist Ramin Bahrami and choreographer Roberto Zappalà.
Among the most anticipated moments are the two evenings on July 23 and 24 at the Teatro Rossini with the renowned Momix and their show Botanica Season 2.
