The major national pro-life demonstration in the heart of Rome
The "Choose Life" National Demonstration, also known as the March for Life, is the main public event for the Italian pro-life movement. Each year, it draws thousands of people to the capital from every region of Italy, marching through the historic center of Rome, the political and symbolic heart of the country and the Lazio Region. The initiative is promoted by the Pro Vita & Famiglia association, alongside a vast committee that brings together over one hundred associations, ecclesial movements, Pregnancy Help Centers, and volunteer groups.
The march was created to publicly affirm the value of human life in every phase and condition, from conception to natural death. The organizers call for greater attention to issues of birth rates, support for mothers in difficulty, care for the most vulnerable, and those with disabilities, while expressing their opposition to abortion, euthanasia, and embryo manipulation. The atmosphere is intentionally peaceful and festive: flags, banners, songs, and families with children give the day a colorful and participatory character.
The route winds through some of Rome's most famous squares. Traditionally, it starts from Piazza della Repubblica in the early afternoon; from there, the procession moves through the city streets until reaching the final destination, where speeches are held by spokespeople and representatives of the participating associations. The event attracts not only believers and volunteers but also numerous young people, family associations, and delegations arriving by bus from dozens of Italian cities.
Pro-life marches in Rome have roots dating back to the early 2010s, and in recent years they have gathered around the national "Choose Life" format, capable of mobilizing diverse sectors of the Catholic and associative landscape in a single day. The choice of Rome is no coincidence: its proximity to Parliament, institutions, and the great Christian basilicas gives the event a strong symbolic value, aimed at both politicians and public opinion.
Thanks to the network of promoting associations, participation is organized extensively across the peninsula: many dioceses, parishes, and local groups arrange dedicated transport to the Municipality of Rome. The day concludes with a public moment of prayer, testimonies, and speeches, often broadcast via live stream for those unable to be physically present in the capital.
On Saturday, June 13, 2026, Rome hosted a new edition of the "Choose Life" National Demonstration. The procession started in the early afternoon from Piazza della Repubblica at 2:30 PM, crossing the center of the capital and concluding in front of the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano. This year, the event once again gathered the support of over 110 associations and organizations from the pro-life, family, and ecclesial spheres.
The spokespeople for the initiative were Massimo Gandolfini and Maria Rachele Ruiu, who called for a commitment to defend mothers and children and to promote birth rates. As per tradition, the day was designed as a joyful and peaceful public moment, with a live stream broadcast starting in the late afternoon for those who could not reach Rome.
The meeting point is Piazza della Repubblica, served by the Repubblica metro station (Line A) and just a short walk from the Roma Termini railway station, the main hub for high-speed and regional trains. The area is also accessible via numerous urban bus lines.
The demonstration is free and open to everyone. Many associations, parishes, and dioceses organize group buses from their respective cities: it is advisable to check with local groups or the official website for registration details.
As this is a long walking procession in the center of Rome, comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection are recommended during spring and summer days. Temporary traffic changes may occur on the streets along the route.
