About Choco Carnival

The historic Granarolo dell'Emilia Children's Carnival, in the province of Bologna, reinvents itself as Choco Carnival: the first chocolate carnival in the Bolognese Plain. Floats, a band, and the Petronian Flag-wavers parade along Via San Donato on a Sunday afternoon dedicated to families, with the classic candy toss transformed into a real shower of chocolates. A free, cheerful, and inclusive village festival, made of masks, entertainment for the little ones, and lots of flavour.

The Children's Carnival Becomes Choco Carnival

In Granarolo dell'Emilia, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Bologna less than twenty kilometres from the capital, Carnival has been a beloved event for families for decades. The historic Children's Carnival underwent a transformation in 2026, when it was revamped and renamed Choco Carnival – the Carnival that tastes of chocolate: the first chocolate carnival in the Bolognese Plain, with an original and distinctive format that enhances local tradition in a contemporary way.

The Parade on Via San Donato

The heart of the event is the parade of floats that winds through the town's streets, particularly Via San Donato, on a Sunday afternoon entirely designed for children and families. The floats are accompanied by the band and the Petronian Flag-wavers, who bring colour and spectacle along the route. Chocolate is the real star: the traditional candy toss is transformed into a shower of chocolates that falls on the children ready to catch them.

A Community Celebration

More than just a name change, Choco Carnival represents a new way of experiencing the festival: greater safety for children and families, more involvement of local businesses, and an even stronger sense of community. The event is organised by the Pro Loco of Granarolo dell'Emilia together with the Municipality and the Polisportiva Lovoleto, with the support of numerous local associations and volunteers.

What You'll Find in the Square

  • Parade of floats for children and families
  • Special toss of sweets and chocolates along the route
  • Entertainment and fun for the little ones
  • Music, shows, and awards for costumed groups
  • The traditional Carnival Lottery
  • Food stalls with chocolate specialities and local products

Choco Carnival is a free and inclusive event, suitable for all ages, and remains one of the most cherished moments of winter in Granarolo dell'Emilia and throughout the plains of the province of Bologna, in Emilia-Romagna.

Choco Carnival — edition 2026

The 44th edition of the Granarolo dell'Emilia Children's Carnival marked the birth of Choco Carnival, the Carnival that tastes of chocolate. Two days of celebration: Saturday, February 21st, the masked evening "Who Are You Tonight?" in Piazza del Popolo, and Sunday, February 22nd, the grand parade of floats on Via San Donato with a chocolate theme.

In 2026, the historic Children's Carnival of Granarolo dell'Emilia was revamped as Choco Carnival – the Carnival that tastes of chocolate, the first chocolate carnival in the Bolognese Plain. The event spanned two days, maintaining the usual festive spirit for families and children, with a renewed focus on safety.
