Occitan, Franco-Provençal, and French culture comes to Gravere
In the heart of winter, the small town of Gravere, perched in the upper Susa Valley within the Metropolitan City of Turin (Piedmont), welcomes its stop of Chantar l'Uvèrn, the traveling festival that runs from Candlemas to May Day across the western Alpine valleys to give voice to the territory's minority cultures and languages: Occitan, Franco-Provençal, and French.
Chantar l'Uvèrn is not an isolated event, but a large-scale cultural project that involves around thirty municipalities every year, spread across the Susa, Sangone, Chisone, and Germanasca valleys. The event is curated by the Chambra d'Oc association together with the Alpi Cozie Protected Areas Management Board, with the support of the Piedmont Region and the Metropolitan City of Turin. Concerts, theatrical performances, singing workshops, seminars, and moments dedicated to anthropology and environmental protection make up a dense calendar that, edition after edition, features dozens of appointments.
The Gravere stop takes place in the Salone Polivalente Sicheri, on Via Roma, and offers evenings of live music and dance concerts. The common thread is the philological recovery of traditional sounds and repertoires: Alpine melodies, Occitan and Franco-Provençal dances, and songs that weave the memory of the high lands with transalpine influences. It is an opportunity to rediscover an identity heritage that is still very much alive, in a convivial atmosphere where the public is invited to dance and participate.
For those visiting the upper Susa Valley, Chantar l'Uvèrn is an authentic window into a cultural world that is often little known. In Gravere, admission is free and the evening becomes a moment of community: no distant stage or marketing, just musicians, dances, and an ancient language that continues to tell the story of the Piedmont mountains.
The Gravere stop of the 17th edition of Chantar l'Uvèrn was held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the Salone Polivalente Sicheri, as part of the festival's widespread calendar that, from Candlemas to May Day, visited about thirty municipalities in the Susa, Chisone, Sangone, and Germanasca valleys. The evening featured traditional music and dances from the Occitan and Franco-Provençal area, in line with the festival's mission to promote the minority languages of the Piedmontese territory.
The group Parenaperde — whose name means "nothing to lose" in the local patois — performs music and dances from the Upper Susa Valley and the entire Occitan area, blending the enthusiasm of live music with the philological recovery of sounds from the past and a look at transalpine French traditions.
