About Castrum Diani

Castrum Diani is the medieval reenactment that every September takes the historic center of Diano Castello, in the Gulf of Diano, back in time. For two days, the village in the province of Imperia is filled with jesters, musicians, dancers, swordsmen, falconers, and fire-eaters, while the narrow streets fill with the aromas of medieval food and scenes of past life. A historical event born in 1983, it is now one of the most anticipated events of the Diano summer, capable of combining spectacle, tradition, and the unique atmosphere of an authentic Ligurian castrum.

Castrum Diani, the Middle Ages come alive in Diano Castello

Castrum Diani is the grand medieval reenactment of Diano Castello, a hilltop village in the Gulf of Diano, province of Imperia, whose very name refers to the castrum, the fortified settlement of medieval times. Founded in 1983, the event has a long history and represents one of the most deeply rooted traditions of the area.

Two days in the past

During the event, the historic center transforms into a medieval village animated by jesters, musicians, dancers, swordsmen, falconers, and fire-eaters. Throughout the alleys and small squares of the village, there are performances, exhibitions, and scenes of daily life from the past, while stalls offer medieval food and specialties prepared in the style of the era.

A village made for reenactment

The strength of Castrum Diani lies in the natural setting offered by the village: the narrow alleys, the stone houses, the views of the Gulf. Walking through Diano Castello during the reenactment means immersing yourself in a suspended atmosphere, where the line between spectacle and real place becomes blurred.

The summer of Diano Castello

Castrum Diani ideally closes the village's summer season, which is rich in events including the Premio Vermentino and the Castrum Musicae festival. For visitors, it's an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Western Ligurian Riviera, far from the more crowded coast.

Castrum Diani — edition 2026

Castrum Diani returns to Diano Castello on September 6 and 7, 2026, starting from 4 PM. The historic center transforms into a medieval village with jesters, musicians, dancers, swordsmen, falconers, and medieval food in the narrow streets.
