The village of Diano Castello returns to the Middle Ages with jesters, musicians, and swordsmen
Castrum Diani is the grand medieval reenactment of Diano Castello, a hilltop village in the Gulf of Diano, province of Imperia, whose very name refers to the castrum, the fortified settlement of medieval times. Founded in 1983, the event has a long history and represents one of the most deeply rooted traditions of the area.
During the event, the historic center transforms into a medieval village animated by jesters, musicians, dancers, swordsmen, falconers, and fire-eaters. Throughout the alleys and small squares of the village, there are performances, exhibitions, and scenes of daily life from the past, while stalls offer medieval food and specialties prepared in the style of the era.
The strength of Castrum Diani lies in the natural setting offered by the village: the narrow alleys, the stone houses, the views of the Gulf. Walking through Diano Castello during the reenactment means immersing yourself in a suspended atmosphere, where the line between spectacle and real place becomes blurred.
Castrum Diani ideally closes the village's summer season, which is rich in events including the Premio Vermentino and the Castrum Musicae festival. For visitors, it's an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Western Ligurian Riviera, far from the more crowded coast.
On September 6 and 7, 2026, starting at 4 PM, the historic center of Diano Castello hosts the new edition of Castrum Diani. For two afternoons and evenings, the village comes alive with costumed figures, itinerant shows, and scenes of medieval life.
Jesters, musicians, dancers, swordsmen, falconers, and fire-eaters accompany visitors through the alleys, while stalls offer street food with a medieval twist. Admission to the village is free.
Detailed hourly program to be announced by the Municipality in the days prior.
Diano Castello can be reached in a few minutes from Diano Marina, exit Imperia Est on the A10 motorway. The historic center is pedestrianized: it is advisable to park in the areas below the village and walk up.
The reenactment traditionally takes place in the afternoon and evening. Access to the village is free; food stalls are subject to a charge.
