The natural spectacle of flowers on the Piano Grande of the Monti Sibillini
On the plateau of Castelluccio, a hamlet of Norcia in the province of Perugia, one of Italy's most extraordinary natural spectacles takes place every year between June and July: the Flowering. The fields cultivated with Castelluccio PGI lentils are colored along with red poppies, blue cornflowers, violets, and wild flowers, painting the Piano Grande and Pian Piccolo with a palette that changes day by day.
The Flowering is located in the heart of the Monti Sibillini National Park, in a high-altitude landscape of rare beauty dominated by the village of Castelluccio. It is not a fixed-date event: the peak moment depends on the climatic progress of the season and usually occurs between mid-June and early July. For this reason, it is closely followed by hikers and photographers from all over Europe.
To best enjoy the phenomenon, guided excursions are organized along unusual routes, far from the most crowded paths. On weekends with high attendance, direct access to Castelluccio is regulated by a traffic management plan, while on weekdays access is generally free. The Flowering is a natural heritage that tells the agricultural and landscape identity of Norcia and the Apennine Umbria.
For the 2026 season, the moment of maximum splendor of the Castelluccio Flowering is expected, according to the usual trend, between the end of June and the first days of July. Guided excursions on the Piano Grande are planned from June 20th to July 5th, generally in the morning (9:30 AM - 1:30 PM).
Being a natural phenomenon, the precise dates of the peak color remain indicative and depend on the season's climate. For weekends with high attendance, a traffic management plan is planned, with direct access to Castelluccio regulated; on weekdays, access is generally free.
The Flowering does not have a program of events in the strict sense: it is a natural phenomenon. The organization mainly concerns access and guided excursions:
The official calendar of access and shuttle services will be communicated closer to the season.
Castelluccio is a hamlet of Norcia (PG), reachable by car from the road that climbs from Norcia towards the Piano Grande (about 28 km). On peak flowering weekends, a traffic management plan is in place with restrictions on direct access.
The phenomenon usually occurs between mid-June and early July, but the dates cannot be predicted precisely because they depend on the season.
Guided excursions are organized (also in the morning, 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM). Layered clothing and trekking shoes are recommended, given the altitude.
