A day of rugby in the sporting village of Predosa
The Castelferro Rugby Tournament is a summer sporting event held in the village of Castelferro, one of the most vibrant areas of the Predosa municipality in the province of Alessandria, Lower Piedmont. The event brings the oval ball to the Polisportiva M. De Negri sports complex on Viale Rimembranza, turning a summer day into a celebration of sport and community.
The tournament spans an entire day, with matches and activities running from morning until late afternoon. It is an event designed for everyone: families, rugby enthusiasts, and curious visitors looking to spend a few hours outdoors. Admission is free, in keeping with the tradition of local festivals that prioritize meeting and sharing over pure competition.
Castelferro is no ordinary village: its name derives from the Latin Castrum Ferri, and the settlement has been documented since the Middle Ages. Above all, it is a place with a very strong sporting identity. The Polisportiva M. De Negri, founded in the early 1970s, made this small Piedmontese center famous thanks to its successes in tamburello (tambourine ball), a discipline in which Castelferro has won numerous national titles, becoming the first village in Italy to be crowned national champion. Today, the same sports club diversifies its offerings, adding disciplines such as volleyball, basketball, and, of course, rugby to its repertoire.
The Rugby Tournament is part of this long tradition of sport acting as a community glue. In the summer calendar of Castelferro, alongside popular events like the famous Sagra dei Salamini d'Asino (Donkey Salami Festival), the tournament is an opportunity to bring the village together around the playing field. It is an authentic experience of lesser-known Piedmont, far from the big crowds, where sport maintains a genuine and familiar dimension.
